As a big fan of NES games, this is by far the best homage to that era.
Choice of characters couldn't have been better, and it was a pleasant surprise to see a Battletoad joined with all these iconic pixelated heroes.
But let's say I am not a fan, and I can't recognize the controller, let alone all the characters, it is still awesome looking fan art, and I use term "fan art" loosely because it is more than that.
I don't know if this was done in Paint, but it sure looks that it could be done in Paint, and that's what fascinates me.
It is clear that these characters might as well be sprites for a game, but it is done in such a masterful way, every character here can be an art piece for itself.
I have nothing but praise for this art, and it is something I would proudly hang on my wall.

Ax Battler (from Golden Axe) - possibly on the Dragon or Lizard, Blaze Fielding (Streets of Rage, Wonder Boy, Sonic the Hedgehog, Psycho Fox, Alex Kidd, and up the top, Opa Opa (Fantasy Zone).

I THINK the spaceship in the back comes from Gradius.
I also recognize the Gargoyle, though I'm unsure of the game... Castlevania? Ninja Gaiden? (I think he was a Castlevania villain, but again, not sure)
I also recognize the boy in the leaf-pants, but... don't ask me where he comes from, I have no idea.
The Dragon/Dino is the only one I don't recognize at all.
In the Background, I definitely recognize Kid Icarus, but the others are way to hard to recognize for me, unfortunately :/
I'm also not a kid from the NES era, but SNES era - only NES games I played and beat were Final Fantasy (I+II) and Legend of Zelda

The man in the leaf-pants riding the dino is Master Higgins from "Adventure Island".
The gargoyle, also known as an Arramer, is Firebrand from "Gargoyle's Quest". Arramers also appear in "Ghouls 'N Ghosts".
The spaceship is from the "Gradius" franchise.

Soooo good! My favorite things in this picture are the dinosaur, the excite biker, Firebrand sitting on the controller, and the controller as well, and Link, his green eyebrows trips me out. Also, like where you put your signature. But what's with Master Higgins, not eating enough?
