I agree 1000%. Although I do not have a Pit, I have a German Shepherd, but I still get those same looks that my dogs looks dangerous. Back in the 80's people hated German Shepherds, the 90's it was the Rottweiler, and now it's the Pitbull. I swear, people need to educate themselves. All dogs are not born to be killers, its the owners who make them that way. Thank you for this.

I really hate people who think a certain breed of dogs should be destroyed for just being that breed of dog. I love big dogs, I plan on getting a doberman or a rottie, or even a pittbull whenever I have my own place, I've had small dogs the majority of my life and they've gotten rather annoying. I don't hate them or anything, but I don't really care for tripping over them either.
I've gotten scars from our yorkie, he's a little on the big side for being a yorkie, to be honest. And they were just from play, but he has bitten me and left marks all the same. It's true, any dog can bite. People need to get that through their heads.

I always knew people were afraid of pitbulls, but to write a book about how the species should be killed is way over the top. Personally, I think that the main reason a pitbull will attack someone is either they were trained too or are defending themselves. Why should they be killed for something like that? Wolves have killed people and people are all "omgz, save teh wolves!" And honestly, some owners don't deserve to have a pet.
I lived with a pitbull from when I was born until I was twelve, and she never attacked me. She was even one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known. It's inhuman and cruel that people say a dog should be put down when they probably don't know anything about it, or have ever met it.
Completely agree about the family part. Some people can get really close to their pets. Pitbull or not.
Also your dog is adorable, and sounds funny.

The same thing happens to my friend's Husky mix(she has blue eyes) and she's had people say she has "the devil in her" along with her rotweiler mixes, simply because they are rotweilers. It's awful how people presume about a dog. Any dog could attack, I've never been attacked by pitbulls but I have been attacked by a few different spitz's(or however it is spelt). I don't go around telling people to put their dogs down even though I've been attacked. They are isolated instances. Though I do admit I am more wary about how I react around that breed of dog, simply because I have been.
They weren't badly raised, just very protective and not behind their fence as they were used to.

It really depends on the person. Just a few minutes ago, I was walking my dog and this random man from my building told me to "Get that monster out of here." To that, I reacted with, "Before you judge him, get to know him. He doesn't bite." And walked away.
Also, my grandma and uncle had doubts when we were at the shelter looking for a dog. I just knew he was mine when I saw him. He was all sad and beaten up, but I knew I could change that. Since then, they changed their opinions and love him to death.

I totally agree. A couple years ago my dad found a pitbull that someone had dumped and brought it home and she was the sweetest dog we've ever had. We already had 3 dogs so we kept her untill our local vet could find a family for her but if I ever even had a hesitation about pit bulls she cleared them up. It's definitly how dogs are raised not there breed. I wish we could have kept her because she was amazing.

Exactly. Just because a dog is a certain breed does not mean that every single dog of that breed is exactly like it. Some people just don't understand the fact that dogs have personalities like we do.

I'm actually doing an in-depth report about Pit bull-type dogs for a very large project. It's worth 40% of my grade in two classes.
So far what I've found is this:
-There are three specific breeds of dog recognized as "pit bulls" and most pit bull type dogs don't meet the requirements of any of these breeds, because they are mixed with other kinds of dogs, or with eachother.
-Pit Bulls were originally bred in Europe as crosses between bulldogs and certain types of terriers- for dogfights and bearbaiting. Owners trained them to be aggressive but loyal to thier owners. During attacks, they target parts of the body that will be done the most damge- deep muscle tissue, face, and hands. They are capable of doing more damage than any other breed of dog. Train a pit bull to be agressive, and it is a killing machine. They are made to kill, it's what they were bred for.
-As much as they can be trained to be family dogs, there are numerous cases of dogs suddenly attacking owners, such as this one [link]
-Currently, pit bulls are the most abused of any breed, because they are often bred for underground dogfights. Since dogfighting is illegal, most owners will deny owning agressive dogs, and then those dogs will attack people.
-Pit bull type dogs were resposible for over 76 human deaths between 1978 and 1998.
-While no U.S. State completely bans pit bulls, the counrties of New Zealand and England do.
-Nowhere in the U.S. are pit bulls put down due to city or state regulations or bans.
-In places where pit bulls are banned or regulated, owners are allowed to keep dogs that were born or purchased before the time the law took effect.
So... There you have it. It's clear that pitbulls need to be treated differently than other breeds of dog, but I agree with you completely- banning them is not neccessary.

Pitbulls were actually first bred for sport and herding. After some idiot realized they would be a good bet in a dog fight because of their muscles and strength, they started breeding them for that cause.
And dogs only attack if they feel threatened, or were abused in the past. My dog was abused and dumped before we brought him in, but I know for a fact he would never hurt anyone. As sad as it is, dogs don't fight back to abuse because they love and respect their owners too much to do so.

Hafell In reply to Jinnxx [2011-03-04 03:21:41 +0000 UTC]
Again, please, research. They were bred in Europe as fighters. During the Roman empire. It was later in the 1800's that they became more popular as hunting dogs.
Again, there are cases of great family dogs turning on thier own family. Not just pit bulls. The thing about pit bulls it thier ability to do more damage than any other breed of dog, which is why places in the U.S. have regulations on them.
I'm not saying your dog is a killer. I'm just saying that those are the facts.

On dogobedience.com it has a list of the top most aggressive dog breeds and guess what? Pit bulls arent even on it. But these are the dog breeds that are: Chow Chow, Papillon, Old English Sheepdogs, Llasa Apso, Rottweilers, Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Dachshunds, Jack Russell Terriers, Giant Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, Pekingese and Miniature Pinschers. This is what it says after that list. "In truth, most pit bulls aren't really as aggressive as they're made out to be. They tend to be loving, gentle and playful. But there are some that have been raised and trained to be highly aggressive. Such pit bulls tend to be more aggressive toward other animals than people. Aggressive pit bulls often have a history of being abused or neglected, and getting trained specifically to fight. Pit bulls that have been mistreated are seen as being extremely dangerous, so avoid them. If you own one, treat it gently and lovingly." So think about that while your writing your report...

Hafell In reply to Clowser09 [2011-03-04 03:29:31 +0000 UTC]
I didn't say pit bulls were usually more agressive, I said that they were originally bred to be agressive.
And while they are usually loving and great dogs, (don't get me wrong, the owner's of my local laundramat have one who loves people to pieces!), they have been known to turn on thier owners. And pit bulls are much more dangerous in attacks than any other breed of dog. They bite, and don't let go. They target the face, hands, and big muscles. If you get attacked by a pitbull, you won't be fine after ten stitches and a day in the hospital. You can be maimed for life.
As far as papillons, toy poodles, jack russels, and Chihuahuas go- if you get attcked by one, you probably won't die. It's not that pit bulls are mre agressive, it's just that they're a million times more likely to kill you when they are.

My dog can't look me in the eye for more than 3 seconds because he respects me and looks at me as the Alpha of the family (even though I'm the youngest). That's one of the reasons that animal abusers think it's fun to hurt animals. It makes them scared of them, and they feel all so powerful.

AnimaRadiance [2011-03-03 03:13:28 +0000 UTC]
I used to own a pitbull. I had to leave him behind when I moved out, and just three days after I moved, he died.
So, pop quiz:
Where, in there, did I ever say that I or anybody else was attacked by my dog?
That's right, I didn't.
I get it: Pit bulls are a naturally violently-inclined breed of dog, but that's the fault of the BREEDERS, not the BREED. If we hadn't made them FIGHTING DOGS, they would likely be one of the most lovable classes, short of a Golden Retriever or a Beagle.
It's not their fault that people get hurt because of them. THEY WERE BRED THAT WAY. It's been so roughly ingrained in their system that they sometimes can't help themselves. What's worse is when they're forced to live that way, which just compounds their unfortunate upbringing, by making them live it out, in stupid things like dogfights and over-the-top defensive positions. I get making the dog a guard dog. I get it. But do you HAVE to make them bloodthirsty, too?
And yet people blame the dogs for everything about them that's wrong.
Figure THAT out.

Jinnxx In reply to AnimaRadiance [2011-03-03 23:02:26 +0000 UTC]
When people tell me they blame my dog for attacks that Pitbulls have done, I look them in the eye and say, "I blame YOU." Because, truly, some of the Pitbulls wouldn't be this way if those ones weren't bred like that. My dog was born a stray, and taken in by people who bred dogs to fight. They fought him, but dumped him after he got seriously injured because he just wouldn't fight. He's never been aggressive, never hurt anyone or anything, and to be honest, I don't think he ever will.
It is those bad breeders fault that these beautiful dogs have such a bad rap. And same with Golden Retrievers. They are so overpopulated that they get inbred in the process, have all these hip and leg problems, blindness, mental and health issues, everything. They actually have the highest attack rate because of their high population. My best friend has one (purebred, bought from a certified breed), and she goes into these constant aggressive fits, and will actual ATTACK, with teeth, my friend. The funny thing is, our other friends prefer Briar>Snoop just because Snoop is a Pitbull.
It just goes to show you that you have to get to know a dog like a person before you judge. Just because they're a particular breed doesn't make them a monster. I hate stereotypes like that.

AnimaRadiance In reply to Jinnxx [2011-03-03 23:24:19 +0000 UTC]
See? And yet people praise innocent dogs who don't HAVE that kind of rap for being "man's best friend" or "a good family dog", and then they act all shocked when the thing goes ballistic while the supposedly evil, monster of a hound sits back and has a lovely time with the kids and doesn't hurt a fly.
Like, for instance, my uncle's Wolf-Husky mix. Wolves are considered dangerous. Huskies are naturally tough dogs because of their breeding. But that hybrid mix of the two is the most adorable thing I've ever been around, in part because my uncle knows how raising a dog should go, and in part because it's surprisingly more calm than, say, a supposedly harmless chihuahua (okay, that might be stretching a bit, but still). And yet people still give the poor dog slack, telling my uncle (and me!) that we should be put in prison for even THINKING of letting such a monster around human beings because "IT'S DANGEROUS, BAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!"
It just makes me sick that people cling so tightly to such old fairy tales and misfortunes that they won't just try and make it better and take away that crime, just so they can have a reason to cling to that explains away why they never want to own one or be near one of those supposedly dangerous breeds.
It's ridiculous.

But he's over friendly, so I understand when people are a little freaked out when he tries to lick their face. But do they really have to point and stare? It's a dog, not a terrorist >.>

I agree with you completely. If someone trains a dog into violent behaviour or fails to train it into calm, good behaviour, it's definitely not the dog's fault. It wasn't taught any better.
What's even sadder, in my opinion, is how people will use a dog's (trained) violent behaviours to excuse turning a blind eye on animal abuse.
