Very nice. you are very talented. this is my favorite Greek story. In the version i read, she ran from Apollo because she wanted always to remain pure.

I love the pose here. I've seen her being terrified in her transformation, or simply becoming an elegant tree-nymph, but this has a little of both... The aspects of hiding herself, keeping herself away from unwanted attentions, but even in the act of sealing herself away forever, she is beautiful.

Thank you for the insightful comment! I actually did this piece as a study on figures and also shading but as I was drawing the women she looked tree like to me and then I thought well why not play on that and make her into Daphne. Thank you for visiting!

I just HAD to stop and have a look at this.
This is a really good sketch! One of the best I've ever seen--and that's something because I've seen ALOT of sketches.
A few critiques:
1. The hair didn't fade as well as it could have into bark.
2. A little more attention to grass was lacking.
3. Her right lower leg is a little too thick (but with historic reference, you could say it's more correct like this back then than it is now).

I've tried my hand at sketching too. Not as good as you, but for a beginner, I guess I'm okay. I can't find a scanner though, so I can't figure out how to post it here... ^_^*

Such a flow and mood to this work. It's elegant and mistical, and an impressive new outlook on that moment in the myth of Daphne and Apollo.

Very nice picture. You've hidden her face, though. However, given the whole story of Daphne, I'd imagine it wouldn't be a very happy one.

Interesting side-issue, since you seem to be a mythology buff like meself:
There's a version of Genesis which describes how Eve was lusted after by a jealous, leacherous, vengeful God - he chased her, and in order to elude him, she abandoned her body (which was defiled by God) turned herself into a tree, and entered the body of the serpent. She then convinced the empty body she just abandoned and, consequently, Adam, to eat from her branches, which granted them spiritual awakening and freedom from God. Which is why he checked them out of Eden.
Which is a little different from what we're told, in't it?
Anyway, this is a cool image - the languid pose contrasts very well with the flight motif provided by the myth, and the rendering's very nice. I only have one suggestion: Daphne's face isn't showing up enough - even though it's turned away, it should be the main focus of the image. I'd put a bit more contrast between her face and the branch behind it.
Since her face is quite delicate and lightly rendered, I'd give the bark behind it a little more definition - run the detail right up to the edge of her face, rather than tone it down just before. Either that or really give her head a halo - increase the range of the definition decrease around her head to give it a free space of its own. It depends, I guess, on what's going on - is Daphne being consumned by the tree, or is she sinking into it (if you get me, is Penenus having his own joke, obeying the letter of Daphne's wish but humourously evading the spirit of it)? Anyway, you can hopefully see what I'm getting at...
cheers

Hello Daphne. Why are you a tree? Is it because you are rooted in something that you cannot escape? Is it because leaving this makes you feel as though you'll perish? Maybe it's because your roots are deeper than all of us could possibly imagine. Or is it just that the gods thought it would be a spiteful joke to turn you into a tree for your insolence toward men?

Well, conversely, the story of Apollo can be applied to many, many men. (myself included) Think about it this way. Men will wander their lives aimlessly save for a solitary goal: the perfect woman. Regardless of whether they were struck by an arrow, or a glance, they will waste everything they have in relentless pursuit of this woman. But when the caller realizes his suitee is not going to return this feeling, then he will drown his mind and body in everything that is unpure in order to forget about her. As for punishment by proxy, I think that women and men alike are plagued by this due to arrogant ideology.

If you resist too much, you'll strike out anyway. But if you swing your hardest, a homerun is inevitable.

I just wish I were higher paid for the sport that we call life.
It was really nice chit-chatting. Hopefully we can do this again. As for me, work is calling my name and I must attend to it. Have a wonderful evening.
