Description A tutorial detailing my experiences making a Sanzo breastplate for Saiyuki cosplay.

Like I say, most of this happened because I lucked out finding a couple of bamboo mats, but this would be doable if you just cut out oblongs of either bamboo or lightweight wood and then stained them to resemble bamboo.

I also realize not everyone has access to their dad's woodworking shop and expertise, but I hope this at least points people in the right direction!

I like the style, but I'm not sure about using wood, personally. Do you think there would be an alternative to using wood?

I only used bamboo because I came across it quite by accident and it was already in the shape I wanted, and Sanzo's breastplate is bamboo so it seemed ideal.

I have seen other people use leather, or I'm sure you could use some sort of thicker, sturdier material like that outdoor waterproof stuff you see in fabric stores and cut it into strips. I find that thinner material doesn't hold up well because the breastplate pieces is supposed to be rigid. I guess it's really just a question of your personal preference and how comfortable you are using the material you choose. Fortunately I had my dad available to do the hard work!

I never knew Sanzo's breastplate was made of Bamboo! That's some awesome trivia right there. How did you learn that?

Thanks so much with getting back to me as well, you're very kind. I think your tutorial is awesome by the way, just in case that didn't come across in my previous message. (Your breastplate is also the best I've seen.)
