About four years ago I got my first drawing tablet and attempted to draw a jellyfish mermaid.

The result was... alright. The anatomy was off and the colours were far too pale and similar. This is partially due to my inexperience, but also due to me not knowing the program really well.

The tools I used then were mostly a black pen for outlines and a coloured pen for.. well, colours. I cell-shaded the drawing by mixing a darker shade of the main body.

I think I should also mention that the program I was using at the time was kinda crappy.

Today, I basically use any tool BUT the pen. I make a sketch with a pencil and colour in with watercolours. My drawings often don't have outlines anymore, as I've gotten quite good at shading.

Colour coordination an composition is also an aspect that I daresay I improved on. I understand my program far better now, which enables me to use cool effects for example for lighting.

When I started doing digital I was confused by the new medium and frustrated by my mediocre results.

I didn't use my tablet for almost a whole year after I got it.

Now, I draw every day and get excited about my improving art.

Moral of the story:

Getting started is hard.

Don't expect to be perfect right off the bat, as practice and study of your medium will take time.

But in the end, the work you put in will pay off.
