Rhodochrosite is extremely stable as in the AU Steven and Spinel are inseparable besties. They never get tired of each other! Garnet can stay fused forever because of her undying love, and Steven and Spinel have an unending friendship!
(Yes, I am a Stevinel shipper, but in my AU they're actually platonic! Steven loves Connie!)
I imagine the first time these two would fuse would be in a deadly situation, like the first time that Smoky Quartz came into existence. Maybe fighting against a Corrupted Gem.
