In the manga, it's different. For 1, Rei is more open with her feelings for Shinji, Shinji isn't as emo as the anime, Asuka is a tiny bit less bitchy, Misato is still a babe & a bad-ass, & Rei doesn't wipe out all of humanity &Β die in the end. Instead, Shinji tells her how he feels & she becomes some kind of energy being or something. I like to think that she returned to her physical form &Β she & Shinji ended up together.
