Description
Gideon sits down next to his brother in the grass. There is something interesting about this prince that I just can't make out. I decided to watch him closely. Then I relised that would be rather hard considering the fact that it was so dark that I could bearly see the prince's face. Then as if he was reading my mind, prince William calls out to a nearby soldier. "Excuse me! You there." The soldier looks at the prince and says "Yes sir." The prince replys. "Be a good man and bring us some wood for a fire. And don't worry about finding flint and steel I have some of my own." The soldier gives a deep bow and answers "Right away sir." He then runs of into the brush to find wood.
As I am watching the man go, Gideon speaks to me. "There is no reason to worry about your grandmother. She is safely dressing a wound on that poor soul's leg over there." I felt like hitting myself. In all the excitement I had forgotten about my dear grandmother. I looked over to where William was now pointing. She was indeed dress the wound of a soldier who's teeth were gritting in pain.
Gideon spoke again. "I can hear the poor man's groaning from here." This puzzled me because I definantly couldn't here from that far away. Willaim must have seen my confusion. "My brother here has extremly hightened hearing," the prince said. Gideon then stated "Good hearing is something that is very good to have when you're blind."
This shocked me. I had no idea that one of the princes was blind. I just sat there, staring into the dark at what I thought was the prince's face. He spoke again "Judging from your silence madam, I would guess that you had not a clue that I was blind." I didn't know what to do. I would have just nodded my head, but he was blind. I was also affraid that if I spoke I would be striken again.
Finally prince Gideon says "Please do say something miss. I am not one for awkward silences." I have been given permition to speak, but I've not the idea of what to say. I must say something so I tell the blind prince my name.
"Hello," I say quietly. "My name is Abigale." "Well it is the pleasure of a life time to meet you miss Abigale," the prince says. I can't help but think how oddly friendly the prince is.
Finally the soldier comes with firewood. Prince William lights a fire with the his flint and steel. I could now see Gideon's face clearly. He wasn't the most handsom of men, but he had friendly, milky, light brown eyes. He also had a warm smile. I then decided that I could trust this unusual prince. Seeming to be the exact opposite of his father made him likeable to me. Gideon continues in conversation. "Tell me, what is it like being a healer. I hear a lot of rumors about your kind." "What sort of rumors," I ask shyly. The prince answers "Oh nothing that sounds true to me. Like, some people think that healers are actually witches."
I consemplate on how to answer to this acusation. As healers, Grandmother and I had never used illegal magic like witchcraft. We had always stayed within our legal and Christian based boundries. "Well most healers use some level of magic, but very few use actual witchcraft," I said as calmly as I can could.
"I wasn't aware there was a difference," prince William said with boredom. I was starting to think that William was nothing but a mean, spoiled, rich boy.
Gideon kept his staring eyes fixed on the ground but scolded his brother. "Will, for once don't you think you could show the slitest bit of respect?" William shot his brother a nasty look. Then he glared at me. I wasn't sure wether to be greatful for Gideon defending me, or to be frightened by his brother's deadly gaze. My fear subsided as he shifted his gaze to the ground and cruely whispered "She is a healer. Respect is not something that she should expect from me." He then got up and stalked angrily away.
As I watched him go I heard Gideon say "I opologize. The behavioral similarities of a jackass tend to run in our family." He howled in laughter. I had to cover my mouth from laughing as well.
