Description I think I could have done a lot better on this... but... I got lazy... -_- and I wanted to finish it so I could move onto something else... Well, this is practice at something a little different, I guess, I'm not exactly sure what it is... It was fun though... I liked seeing the difference between the line art and the completed work on this one because it just seems so different, Iunno.

I forgot how to request a critique... but I'd really like to know what people think about this... Also... I'm having trouble with line art-- the black sticks out way too much and I tried making it lighter... but that just looks stupid... -_-; ugh... someone tell me there's a secret to this... if it's just... thinning out the lines, I guess that would work... but... really? Is there anything else I could try first?? XD

Tis really pretty!

Hmmm well, you could try doing the line art in more of a brown? That worked for me before but I'm not sure how it would play out with the colors ^^'

Yeah, I redid the lineart... and it looks really good... ^^ I think I'm going to redo it... the eyes look really good.  I did the hair and again, it doesn't look right... maybe I'm just colouring it wrong... -_-;

Oh? It looked really good before too, so I'm sure its really pretty! XD

:3 sometimes a difrent coloring style is needed for different lines arts, the style may require a softer touch or harsher one pending.

I find that the character the selfs sometimes require a new aproch too

>.> or Just design annoyingly specific characters? Meh.

Right... ; Well, here's the link to the remake of it.

And this particular line art was a crappy line art anyway... it was like... Live Trace in Adobe... whatever it's called... XD I don't know my own programs! Illustrator! There we go. lolol... and you're right... Maybe she just needed to be redone... because I think she looks a whole lot better.

I see you've improved since i last checked your drawings, well done! ^^ Liking the magical feel in this one.

Usually what kind of brushes do you use? Because i'm thinking you're using soft brushes too much and that gives the overall image a blurry texture.
Try to use some hard brushes too and put down your foundation colors with that. You know highlights , midtones, reflected lights etc...just block them in(don't be afraid of the messyness) and after your foundations are down, start blending them with the same (or another xD) hard brush. Use the ALT key to pick up let's say a lighter color of the hair and start painting it into the more darker areas.(of course not into the core shadow areas but a more closer level) The first stroke will be the color of the midtone in between(as the two tints or shades of colors blend) so pick that up and repeat this until you're satisfied with it. Of course this will look a bit stringy so now you can use your soft brushes and do the same process to soften the color transitions.

(Ehh.. i hope i wrote clearly, i'm so bad at explanations xD but i really want to help)

Hmm... well yes lineart. I'm in the same shoes as you. I'm trying to "abandon" it to a certain degree because of the style i'm trying to achieve but i really like the cartoon style too so sometimes i make drawings with the vector tools of PaintTool SAI.

To make it a bit more lighter, use a darker shade of brown. Don't go with the 100% black, it's very intense. You can also try (if your lineart is on a seperate layer) to reduce the opacity to make it a little bit more subtle. Or use a really soft eraser to remove the lineart from where the light hits the form. There is also the option of coloring your lineart. Lock the transparent pixels with that checkered button above your layers. After you click that,(while the layer of your lineart is selected)a small padlock will appear next to your layer and you'll be only able to paint on your linework. - When coloring the lines, let's say around the face, pick up the main color of the skin and pick a more darker shade of the same color in your color picker. You have to experiment with what looks better depending on where your lightsource is located.

The variation in the lines thickness is also a great way to create dimension and make lineart look great. This is something i could only achieve in SAI with the pressure tool. I just can't use that stupid pen tool in PS i'm sure it has  it's own good reason to be like what it is right now, but for me it's too over complicated... I don't understand why they couldn't create a vector tool thingy like in SAI or as i hear in Illustrator too.

There is also another option for improving your lines. Use a hard brush like an inking pen and use bold strokes to create lines, if the line comes out broken, undo. Do it until it fits in. This is where your tablet's pressure sensitivity is put to the test ^^ (you can also use this technique called feathering but it will look chicken scratchy)This is pretty hard so it takes time to master it, patience is key.

Hope these tips will help you out somewhat

wow, This is long. ^^  I REALLY appreciate your input here and I'll definitely take what you're saying into consideration. Actually, on ps, when it comes to the colours, I'm using hard brushes, while also using the colour mixer like I use with the skin tone, maybe I shouldn't do that though. XD I didn't think about it being blurry.

As far as the lineart, this colour is more of a dark grey... but as you can see, even the black probably would have suited this picture better, I guess.

And they definitely did help me, thank you very much- like I said, I really do appreciate letting me know what you think about this.

Oh, and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for saying I've improved!! ^^ That makes me really happy!

Heheh, it did become a short novel The color mixer tool is something I absolutely cannot use, it sometimes messes up the base flats so bad that i had to re block the main colors xD and at any rate, the most important thing is to make artwork talk to people so to say. Like this piece, it definitely has life in it. Some people say that you don't have to worry about details, anatomy, etc... You just need a good composition, an interesting subject and let your medium channel your heart's desire.

Yep, you really did improve I think mostly compositon wise and your lineworks got better too. They look more... confident. Haha, I told you i'll be watching. Sorry for not commenting on your previous uploads i did see them though. I just don't have the time and energy to comment sometimes,(and by that i mean meaningful constructive comments) and as you can see once I open my mouth it's hard to shut it up

lol... really, it's quite alright... ^^ I don't mind reading your long winded speech.

But life is what I've been trying to accomplish forever! So when you say that there's "life" in it... That makes me very happy. lol. ^^ and the colour mixer is amazing for skin... but I've been trying to use it for other things and maybe I just... shouldn't. lol... I thought it looked good but when you mentioned that it looked bury, I couldn't exactly argue with that at all...

Also, I find it flattering that you're taking so much time our of your day to help me- again, I really do appreciate it. ^///^
