I am always fascinated by Japanese politics because of the quirks that occur from time to time. Some of the Prime ministers here were famous because of the pretty bad job they did (or did not do) while in office- one got out because of an issue with a geisha, another because of his reaction to a major earthquake striking Kobe ( a Haircut) and the other became a vomit bucket for an important delegate.
There are some who did prove worthy of their position- although what comes to mind is Koizumi because of the length of his term in office (among other things). He is also controversial in his beliefs and action while in office (sending JSDF personnels to Iraq, visiting Yasukuni Shrine while in office, those sort of things).

Ok I take it back- Koizumi wasn't really as successful as I thought he was.
Popular- Most Definitely; Successful- Not as I understand it

Of course the only one I could name was General Tojo in World War II. I think (correct me if I am wrong) the first one (Ito) was later assassinated about 1910 by a Korean? Otherwise they are all faces I can't place. The only other Japanese politician I recall is that leader of the Socialists, whose horrible assassination by a sword carrying fanatic was filmed on television (you can still see it on You Tube). That fellow was never Prime Miister.

Technically, you have to go back before the age of Prime Ministers to find Japan under 'military rule'...since all of the Prime Ministers up through WWII served at the purported pleasure of the Emperor.
In reality, of course, Japan's tradition of having the Emperor be a 'hands-off' ruler (to preserve his mystique of being nigh-infallible) lent an awful lot more power to the office of Prime Minister than it generally has in other nations.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that Nobusuke Kishi was actually that goony-looking, but I looked up his photo, and darned if you weren't right.
Give Canada some credit for being one of the few countries with no history of military rule, at least.

Very impressive. Too bad I know practically nothing about all of them.

Nobusuke Kishi (1957-1960) reminds me of Pee-Wee Herman!

The majority of them were in office only for one to two years. Really odd.
