My ancestor was a Teutonic Knight. He fought in the Third Crusades and lived in the Kingdom of Jerusalem for many years. But he turned against the crusader order after witnessing their atrocities towards the innocent. He fought solo freeing and aiding those who needed him. He even met an Assassin who gifted him a blade (sadly I do not have it). Eventually he made his way back to what would be modern day KΓΆnigsberg and became an advocate for the creation of a proper German-Prussian state, as well as an anti-catholic, yet still a devout christian. This picture reminds me of him. Oh yeah, and his name was Raymond Der Umsatz.

I dunno, but I always found this kind armor looked way more practical than all the plate armor of the late middle ages.

Plate is much more flexible and better-distributed than mail though, as well as harder to get through, which is why it eventually ended up replacing mail.Β

Is the weight distribution of plate armor better than mail? Yes. Is Plate armor more flexible than mail? Fuck no. Protection is situational. Against slashes, plate makes you virtually invincible, but mail armor will give you more than enough protection, the only thing that will get through would be some extremely powerful slashers like axes or heavy falchions. The only real reason why plate replaced mail armor is the superior protection against projectiles of all kindsΒ which was necessary as the warfare shifted more to ranged combat.

Well, maille was used more frequently than plate for all of the middle ages, especially on campaigns because it dosn't rust if you wear it, it's not as hard to put on, it's compact and easy to store and is flexible so I would rather have maille on a campaign than plate. THe only time I would wear plate was if I was jousting or something.
