Urgh, the big dude has a Shield also.
Not this Knights day even if he wins.

I've always wondered how human tactics and weaponry would evolve if we had opponents this much larger than us. Would we go lighter to totally avoid their attacks? Learn to be more efficient with spears and other such tools to compensate for reach? I don't think the knight there has much a chance to parry his opponent. So what will he do? A deadly encounter, indeed. Also, is that big guy an Ogre or some kind of Troll/Giant? Love the scenery.

I think massed spears (or even pikes) and units of heavy crossbow would've been the way to go. Certainly, the only way to beat opponents of this size and strength would be as a group.Β
I don't know why this knight isn't fleeing...but then, the picture always implies a larger story, doesn't it?

Maybe Phalanx formations would be more popular if we felt compelled toward stationary/heavy army usage. The larger story is certainly there, roiling just beneath the surface of every little glimpse we get into an artist's world. Part of why I love this piece is imagining what thoughts seethe within the minds of each combatant. Is it hatred? Fear? Or duty? Perhaps for each of them? After all knights, like soldiers are often times mere tools for the rulers they serve. This brute could be just as bound by tradition and expectation as his human adversary. Fascinating really.
