Disconnect of hand make me remember the "Peace on Earth" by Stanislav Lem. Main hero of this novel got his brain separated in two parts, so his right hand lived by it's own. He talked with it using gesture language.

Well, it's story more about arms race. But I think it's interesting anyway. That's why I love to read sci-fi books: you can find many things for your imagination.
