The 21st century has been very good to Transformers outside the life action movies. And frankly I feel the original movie wasn't that great in the first place.

Was it because the original 1986 TF movie was only for people who followed the entirety of the original G1 series, like the MLP movie of 2017 did?

That was a reason why the movie wasn't very successful, it was barely advertised when it first came out and very few theaters carried it.
Aside from it's less than stellar writing, I feel that the 1986 movie, despite the effort put into it, is a walking example of the worst parts of the Transformers franchise. The plot was designed to sell toys first and tell a story second, that much is clear with how many new characters appear with no explanation and the plot treats them like they were always there. And worse is that it hastily kills off characters who had the older toys, and the new characters are practically immortal. The biggest sign for that is Optimus Prime dying from a few gunshots, and yet Ultra Magnus gets rebuilt after he's blown to pieces.
Some people praise the film as being more mature with all the character death, but really that was just done because the writing was getting more mature, it was done because executives mandated that these characters needed to die because their toys reached the end of their shelf life and new ones were ready to take their place.

MLP 2017 in a nutshell. Without the mature writing deaths and with a Sia cameo. Huh...But atleast that movie was The Dark Knight compared to the other Transformers Movies.
