Description The Guild does not take YOUR orders...

I happen to really like the guild, so much so that that I decided to create a composite illustration showing the Guild homeworld (Junction), depicting the different types of Guildsmen doing Guildsmen stuff. I really happen to like the Dune series (Frank Herbert) as well as the prequel series (Brian Herbert) for the Dune Series. I thought that Brian Herbert did an admirable job writing a prequel to his fathers work, and that the 2 writing styles mesh fairly well. Every time the Guild enters into the books I feel a sense of anticipation followed by a sense of delight, because the different Guildsmen are all a little...different, and it always makes them interesting. Furthermore, they provide provide an excellent and enjoyable theorhetical illustration of applied anarcho-capitalism. So to me, they are also a symbol for my political ideology (anarcho-capitalism). The wierd spherical glowing thing is Norma Cenva, the founder of the Guild, who eventually becomes pure energy. The guy in the desk is a Guild Legate (sort of), and the big headed orange colored freaks would be Guild navigators. To all the people who have not read the Dune series, the orange stuff is not fire, it's a special gas which saturates the chambers that Guild navigators live in. Also, if you havent read the books, I strongly reccomend reading them.

Oh yes, done with colored pencil (Prismacolor).

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. This is an old old drawing though. I have changed my position on some things since I made it. If I do it again the next one will certainly be different. One thing (aside from the navigators having webbed fingers) that I will do different is take away all the blue and give them grey uniforms.

When I first read of Norma's transformation into a Sorceress of Rossk, I thought that she would be the founder of the Bene Gesserit.

Yeah, true. That made it all the more shocking that Vorian Atreides' granddaughter founded the order.

Yeah, she gained the power to change the Water of Life within her body shortly after Norma's half-sister (the daughter of Zufa Cenva and Iblis Ginjo) tried to poison her.

True. Very true. To go off on another tangent, is it just me, or did you get the feeling that Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen would've turned out like he did no matter who raised him?

jmsnooks In reply to 2wingo [2008-04-30 14:49:22 +0000 UTC]

No, I think he would have turned out good if his parents had raised him. In the Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune they elaborate on that theme, and they have a clone of Paul raised by the Baron and he turns out to be nearly as bad as Feyd. I say nearly because Feyd tries to kill the Baron and the evil Paul is a bit more loyal, but still a violent psychopathic dirtbag in all other aspects.

jmsnooks In reply to LeeSkinner [2008-01-14 18:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I wanted my navigators to look non-humanoid yet still intelligent. Because the navigators are supposed to be intelligent. They are somewhat aloof and esoteric, but highly intelligent and not monstrous. I'm not sure who David Lynch is but I know that I really hated how the navigators and the Guild looked in the oldest Dune movie.

2wingo In reply to jmsnooks [2008-05-05 04:59:03 +0000 UTC]

David Lynch is the director of said movie. It's more commonly released under the name of Alan Smithee to cut down on the hate mail.

It's probably because there's a huge difference between the director's cut and the regular version.

jmsnooks In reply to 2wingo [2008-05-16 16:15:08 +0000 UTC]

If they had merely abridged the story in order to condense it down to movie length that would have been acceptable, the problem is that they added in all kinds of stuff that should never have been there. They changed and rewrote the same thing. I mean here's the thing, it's not true to the original story, but they used the LOTR name in order to attract people to the theaters. If they had applied their own title there would not have been nearly so many viewers.

Mmm, I'm not sure I like the inclusion of Norma Cenva, but it's already done, it seems.

(God, those mini-series guild members looked phallic...)

I would assume the navigators would be blue, as their eyes... and more fish-like and non-human.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jmsnooks In reply to greekfired-heretic [2008-01-06 18:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes they do look pretty phallic in the sci fi miniseries. Actually I was thinking about about doing another guild drawing since in the books they wear gray, and this one was based way too much off of the movie. I'd also like to take another shot at the navigators, making them look more twisted. Frank Herbert didn't provide very detailed descriptions of the navigators, but he did say they had webbed fingers and long arms if I remember correctly. Brian Herbert keeps those traits but emphasizes the largeness of their heads, and one of them he describes as looking like an embryo. I made them look orange because they are supposed to be emmersed in tanks full of spice gas. That's one thing I never got about the spice, it's actually orange, but it turns everyone's eyes blue. In the Brian Herbert sequels the navigators are described as bing gray, so if I redo it I'll probably go for that. I was planning on putting Norma Cenva in the 2nd one as well. I would be interested as to why you object to the inclusion of Norma Cenva.

I prefer the old movie style guild members (the ones with the black coats and mouth guards) and the Tleilaxu better. I think I mostly just like the tleilaxu better because they are sneaky little gits who dabble in bizarre sciences, it has nothing to do with their culture or beliefs.

jmsnooks In reply to mindflenzing [2006-04-13 00:46:39 +0000 UTC]

That's right, I forgot you havent read the Dune prequels or Heretics of Dune.

The Tleilaxu have a caste society, Masters are at the top. Masters have light gray skin and can be completely colourless. They are short (about a meter and a half tall, whatever that measures out to be), and have sharp pointed teeth and small noses. The khasadars act as frontier guards, I think they are regular sized. The serving class or working class is called the Domel. I think they are regular sized as well. They do have regular sized people, but I think they all have gray skin. The Face Dancers are the lowest class, and they can look like anything. But as to their natural form, "...Zoal seemed to melt, his features losing precise focus until he had transformed into a hairless, smooth-faced mannequin with no distinctive qualities: waxy skin and smooth fingers without the whorl of fingerprints."--from "House Corrino." All the Tleilaxu women are incapable of walking and speaking, they exist as bloated breeding machines in factories.

As far as their homeworld goes, it's really clean and fastidious, but what exactly you want it all to look like is completely up to your imagination because the books dont go into lots of detail on that. They are huge into biology and create all sorts of different critters for a variety of reasons. They create things intended for eating, like sligs (half slug half pig), as well as living quazi-metamorphic furniture like the chairdog. All sorts of wierd stuff. They dont much care for sophisticated technology unless it has something to do with all their genetic science.

This will give you a pretty good rundown [link]
But they are wrong about the Domel being 4 ft tall. All of them are regular size except for the masters.

I love this composition, JM, and Dune is neat.

How'd you like the Sci-Fi channel Dune treatment versus the earlier Movie treatment of the Navigators? I'd be more strongly the latter, except of course the former had a better (longer) format and the latter only barely used HR Giger's designs.
