Description

I was wondering how you do your eyes and head shapes. It's been troubling me because circles is all I can think of.

Sure! (note, im still learning a lot myself- so please bare with me ^w^)

lets begin with chins/basic head shapes

(A thing to always note: breaking down complicated shapes to easier/simpler shapes first helps in the long run. also thinking in 3D helps here too.)

so for head shapes- I keep mine pretty simple and mostly just change the chin shape up for my base depending on the kind of character I want to draw up

so if they were big and bulky, id go with a round/square chin (1EFC- it gives them more weight and roundness). if they were small and slim, probably a pointier narrow chin. (1A/1D) (study real life and take note of peoples features)

this can go into more depth where you also change the shape of the forehead to achieve a better shape or exaggerate it all(ex. we want a really square face, we make the top of their head flatter/more like a box shape. or if we wanted it rounder, we just keep our round shape and build on it to fit)

Something thats good to remember is how the basic head shape guide rotates around and how it looks from multiple angles. (think of a cube or any 3D shape really floating aimlessly in space and how it looks spinning randomly around)

this’ll help establish where certain features and such are located on the head depending where the face is pointed (this works the same for if the head were at a dynamic angle, like: looking slanted, up, down, to the side, etc. Perspective might be needed for steeper angles like up/down)

things to note on heads and basic angles:

(note: these can vary between styles, this is just what I go with; this is bound to change)

  • the top of ears are usually about the bottom/center of the eye or so (1C)
  • the space between eyes should be about an eye (if you can snuggly fit an eye between those 2 eyes, then you’re good to go)
  • the mouth is about the same length of an eye and and an eye or two roughly above the tip of the chin. (this really varies depending on style/character/mood)
  • the forehead takes up about a third or more of the total head
  • the jawline roughly connects to the bottom of the ear (1C)
  • for ease, the neck connects below the circle guide line of the head, think of it like the spine and how it connects everything (refer to drawings above this)

Things on Eyes

So- the eyeballs are shaped like a sphere/oval sometimes

and what mostly defines the shape of the eye for me is how the characters eyelids are lined up, the shape of the eyebrow, the direction of the pupil and how theyre aligned, as well as its size and shape. (2-ABCD)

  • Things to note on eyes:
    • overall smaller eyes are meant to convey a mature character. (ozpin, blake, cinder)
    • bigger round bright eyes convey naivety/innocence (ruby rose for example) (2F)
    • snake like eyes can be presented as sinister/hiding something (ozpin and cinder follow this note-)
    • usually for me: i draw light spots in eyes to add character to em.
      • this can be removed to make them look more serious/deader
    • smaller pupils convey shock or seriousness

as for drawing eyes, this is what I do:

(3.1) I draw my basic head shape out

(3.2) i sketch out where the outlined shape of my eyes would be

(3.3) If i’m satisfied with how they look, i add a lil more detail and where the pupils would be

(3.4) I add eyebrows and fill in the pupil

(3.5) I either rework it or if Im finally satisfied and am sure my eyes are correct and alligned, I leave it as is or add my whites into the pupils

(when adding lights, what I do is- take a white ink or eraser and just lightly insert a oval shape line- then when satisfied- add my light spot in)

(leaving the pupil black is also something I do- its an easier way to draw eyes out as you dont have to be 100% sure your pupils are correctly aligned)

thats all I can think of for now-

hopefully it helps!- remember, practice practice practice- and if you need help/have questions im here and stuff~
