She wasn't that bad at first, was she? only when she knew she was being cheated by the girl... Actually what is good about Grimm fairytales, they are not formatted to a didactic story. Evil characters have their reasons to be evil (however it's hard to acknowledge this witch's reasons as sufficient).

The original tale or at least the one we are most familiar with was actually called "Persinette" and was written by Charlotte-Rose De La Force. Instead of a witch, it was a fairy--and the reason she placed the girl inside a tower was because she knew of her fate--which was not going to be a happy one--so it was to protect her from it. Of course, the tower was nice and furnished well with wonderful clothes and good food and the fairy would come to visit her often.Β
Β Β Of course, the Grimm brothers eventually omitted out of their later versions of the tale that the prince impregnated Rapunzel who had no idea what this was (In their original version, Rapunzel would ask Mother Gothel why her clothes no longer fit her properly rather than why the prince was so much easier to pull up than her)--of course the prince knew but didn't wish to upset her by explaining it to her. Β The fairy of course was pissed off when she discovered that fate had had its way after all despite her precautions to prevent it.
The fairy then cuts off Persinette's braids and banishes her from the tower to an isolated area with a basket of replenish able biscuits.
The fate of the prince is the same as the Grimms's version and eventually he finds Persinette and her twin children--a boy and a girl through her voice. She restores his sight through her tears--and they are all reunited.
Β However, they aren't out of the woods yet. Now that the prince has arrived, when they try to eat, the biscuits turn to stone. Any water turns to crystals, any herbs they try to gather become toads and venomous snakes, and the birds they tried to hunt became dragons.
They decide that the best thing to do is to die together.
At this moment, the fairy is finally touched, recalls how much she once loved Persinette and transports them in her chariot to the prince's palace of his father. They then of course, live happily ever after.

You are quite welcome, to be honest, I never even knew about this version until I picked up this really great book in high school called "The Great Fairy Tale Tradition." It contains many different tales under certain categories (such as a grouping of Cinderella stories) by different classic fairy tale writers. Here's a link to it:Β www.amazon.com/Great-Fairy-Talβ¦

Even frost! Everything's there. I've been living in Baltic area all life and never travelled further then across the Europe... not that it means it's so bad here. One should choose carefully where to go to avoid too many people, cars and trash, though.

Yes, the places where Nature is all around are getting fewer. And avoiding noise. I love my garden because at least I can keep most of that out and the trees and wildlife in.
