I'm trying to figure out the differences between blender rendering, luxrender, and yafray. Is there a reason why you chose luxrender for this image? (it looks awesome by the way)

caustics are excellent.
I see some noise in the right topmost portion of the image. Maybe it's an artifact due to low resolution?

No, it's an artifact due to little render time.
Luxrender doesn't shoot rays "in order", it shoots rays absolutely random into the scene. Once the scene is sampeled once (every pixel is shot one time), it will start sampling twice and so on...
The process of rendering itself has no end, you can quit the process when you think the image quality is right for you.
About the scene:
looks interesting, keep it up.

Oh, this is beautiful! A great render, and looks like a very detailed model, too. Well cone!
