Description Insight into the very basics of how I often colour, designed for beginners, but with what I hope to be helpful information for everyone... except for those really awesome people who already know everything... *LOL*

Anyways, hope this is useful - I had a few people wanting me to make a colouring tutorial, so here it is.

quite well, all my stuff was the same shade when I coloured before, the layering is REALLY helpful! Still a long way to go before it looks as realistic as your example here, tho!

Yeah, layers are awesome. Kind of a safety blanket, but good so long as you don't rely on them too much

Well... if you dont mind:

How do you "exactly" erase darken and lighten it all? My tablet/mouse work is really unreal to certain extend... tablet is worse than a pencil for me!

How does one create an image of lines and whatnot? Do you just choose either one with lines or without?

How bad is elements for trying to do decent work on pic even if one were as talented as you?

Does it really take that long? Even for you?

And why, why in the name of God, my mind is so frigtened about wonderful ideas it actually bloks my creactivity for overprotection!?

+ if you look at my work you should see my mistakes immeadetly. Comment if you will, i am my art.

"How do you "exactly" erase darken and lighten it all?" What do you mean, how do you erase?

Say you've already got your colour blocked in (let's say, tan, for a lion). Now, you want to start adding some dark tan for darker areas. You can create a new layer of colour for that. Set that layer to "darken/multiply" (either work, depends on your preference), and start adding dark areas. If you made a mistake, and want to erase some of the shadows, on your "darken/multiply" layer, you just use the eraser or undo (CTRL-Z) command. It leaves your base tan colour alone, and just erases the dark parts. Layers are very good for keeping parts of your painting "safe" from other parts, if that makes sense.

"How does one create an image of lines and whatnot? Do you just choose either one with lines or without?" I'm assuming that you draw the lineart yourself, either by hand and then scanning it into the computer, or right in the program itself on its own layer.

"How bad is elements for trying to do decent work on pic even if one were as talented as you?" Not bad at all - an image is probably 33% program and 66% individual skill/practice/patience. It shouldn't matter what program you use. And Elements has all the basic tools, so it shouldn't be a problem. I never use all the fancy tools in PS because I paint more-or-less without fancy brushes or filters or whatnot, with only a few exceptions. I basically use the same tools that Elements has, and no more than that. You should be fine.

"Does it really take that long? Even for you?" Especially for me. My art takes me longer than most people (although still not quite as long as a few people). On average, 5-30 hours per picture.

1. Erase that part which is out of the right area.
Ok... but how am i sophosed to know where place the colour?? It looks so easy for you, as if you have perfect fit for it no matter how bizarre.

I am somwhat out with layers as being 'too easy' or 'cheating'. I can accept if someone else uses them but when i try to generate my own and its starting to work... i just well, my mind creates a block sort of.

2. What is best in drawing line art instead of normal pencil?
I scan as pictures.

3. I am using abod photoshop elements 2.0, no pen tool, no free layering. (The main layer is always locked and cant be altered!) And... it has most useless paintbrus ever... no airbrush at all.

4. Ok

Otherwise, Thank you!

How do you know where to put the different colours? Use lots of photo references

Well, if you aren't going to use layers, then you'll have to learn how to paint manually. If you want really rich, realistic colours, you'll need to learn to set your brush to a low opacity and use lots of different colours - try practicing by copying pictures first, sort of like how I did here (I was using a very primitive program to paint it, so you could definitely do a better job in Elements :3) [link]

Line art is best sketched with a softer pencil, but not too dark, so maybe a 4B/4H. When you're done sketching and ready to make some final outlines, mechanical pencils work great Or just using a nice art pen if you're okay with using pen.

The main layer is always locked in all versions of PS. The way you get around it is by making a copy of the bottom layer - the copy can be unlocked :3

Instead of airbrush, you'll have to rely on low opacity settings. You'll end up painting in a manner similar to how I painted these: [link] [link]

Well all i can say now is that you have been a great help!
Thank you!

I am using layers now, and doing some "other" methods mostly what you suggested.

Interesting. I've now learnt what 'colour' and some of the other ones do, thanks. All I did before, was click through these layers, after I'd painted something. I never thought to select, then paint on the new layer. I shall have to read up on them, now I know my way around a little.
