A quick and cute pic of Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh. I experimented with a different shading style. I think it worked out well, but I should probably work at it a bit more.
Sakaki is actually one of my favorite characters too, so I kinda enjoyed this piece. My girlfriend and I are frequently compared to Sakaki and Kaorin. Maybe I'll do a pic of them someday too.
Whenever I get around to it. Hope you all like it.

I haven't seen the anime, but I have a read a few of the 4koma. Sakaki is my favorite character, her and that evil cat. What is it with her and animals?
I think you really nailed it with this one. My only strike is the skirt - the texture applied looks a little... funny. I can't place why. Just doesn't look right to me. O_o

I was sort of going for a trendy skirt with one of those "pre-spray-painted-on" looks. Not really the result I got, but I thought it worked okay. I do know what you mean though. I probably could've limited this a bit.

Heheh, thanks! Now that you mention it, are you the Sakaki in the relationship or the Kaorin? I've always felt bad for poor Kaorin.
I zoomed in to check out this piece, and I realized that there's actually 2 colors in the hair, not just 1. I think you should have made it lighter so it could stand out. Normally I just see the hair as plain black.
Oh, and another shading technique which could be helpful, use the eye dropper tool and take the colors from an artwork whose shading style you want to imitate. Also compare their shade/normal/highlight colors with the ones you use. I personally like pretty high contrasts, so I'll have the shadow color and highlights noticeably different from the base color.
You might want to check out the pics I have in my favorites, a few of them are Sakaki and Kaorin ones. I actually found it pretty hard to find good Sakaki pics around, a lot of them were just standard lineart copies of stuff in mangas that I already own. And some were unnaturally obese...

I am the Sakaki. I'm taller, have long dark hair, love cute things, and sometimes (but not always) I can be very stoic. Fortunately, my girlfriend, unlike Kaorin, doesn't have nearly as much trouble talking to me. (Actually, I'm the shy one.)
Good advice for the shading. I'll have to experiment with that with future pieces. Hopefully, it'll just become second nature to me after a while.
