Do you produce all of your own stock?

No, not always, I also work with credit free public domain photographs. I have a large archive of interesting material and save all elements I cut out. I don't use stock material supplied here on Deviant Art, except some nude shots I bought. It is kind of sad, because there is a lot of great stock around here, but too often people have such strict rules, their stock is useless. I found that frustrating and decided not to work with other peoples stuff anymore.

And: Finding and collecting new photographs is also interesting and fun.

I can understand the frustration, but I think dA can solve that issue so that everyone can be happy. the site already allows you to sell digital copies of your work under the premium content option, but this future is all but useless because you can still right click + save as. Recode the site so as to disable this command for the deviations themselves and the deviants offering stock will at least be guaranteed a real financial gain from the premium content downloads; thus incentivizing them to share their work more freely. Seriously, it can be done, fanfiction.net is encoded so that no one can either highlight, copy, or paste any of the text in the actual stories themselves . However, the description, withers name, icon, and prettymuch every thing that isn't a part if the submitted fanfic can be. Here's a link so you can see for yourself( www.fanfiction.net/s/9894404/1… ) In addition to this, they can offer the means to place any work the artist chooses under a general public license ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Gene…), which in of itself makes sharing easier for all people while practically guaranteeing that there's little likelihood of a single artist monopolizing the work.

There are solutions to some of these problems. Deviantart just doesn't seem inclined to make use of them.

I'm not sure, if this would solve the problem, because as I understand it, the people or stock providers I'm talking about simply don't want that their stuff is used in an artwork which can be sold - as a print, as coverart, as merch.

Don't get me wrong: The main reason I'm creating my images is because it's my creative way to cope with life, because it's fun, because I feel the need to do so.

But why should I use stock, even if it's perfect, exactely what I'm looking for, if I cannot show the finished artwork on another place like Deviant Art and I'm not allowed to sell this art? That's just useless. That makes no sense to me. These people don't want to make money with their stock, they just say: No.

For me, it's kind of funny seeing artist putting huge watermarks above their artworks which ruin everything, in fear, their precious work could be stolen. I think: Dude, that's the internet. If somebody wants to steal your work, he will do it. Because he can. Rightclick and save or just a screenshot.

I hate watermarks. So I upload my images at 600x600 resolution. The originals are at 6000x6000, you can imagine the loss of details. Still good enough to display and give people a good impression what I do.

How do you understand this problem? Really, I would love your input on the matter.

To me it's a challenge between balancing control over he original work with the sheer creative freedom that our technology currently allows. I have every reason to believe it would, or at least go a long way towards giving artist some piece of mind while allowing others to build on their work more freely. A general public license (GPL) actually does permit the commercial sale of work like yours. The only real stipulation is that you also license your creation under a GPL as well; which allows other to build on it as well.

I have no problem with people who produce stock and make such strict rules that it's completely useless. I just don't use it. I'm not sure if we talk past each other?

I would never allow other people to work and modify my images. Except an collaboration with another artist. Why should I? My images are important to me, they are my property - at least the time I'm living and 70 years after I died.

If people want to make art, they have to create it on their own. Or wait 70 years after JS is passed away and use his images or parts of them.

It's possible that we could be talking past each other. It's not intentional. I have difficulty with communication at times.

With what you just said about the length of the copyright and your rules for use of your materials, however, do illustrate a real problem with both current copyright structure (what good to a creator is a copyright when that creator is dead) and protecting those rights in an age where sharing media has never been easier. I don't believe all work should fall under GPL, but do think it's a viable option for laying down fair terms in the use of that shared content. The ones that fall out of the realm of fair use anyways. And when paired with the right website coding, it can give those creators more peace of mind over how their content is used while making it easier for them to share it in the first place.
