Description My first collaborations with Jeff Valentine led us to create "Mary Sue" characters for ourselves. His Quasar, renamed Blazar because of the then-new Marvel character of the same name. I liked magnetic powers.
These designs are authentic reproductions of my old designs, but I have to say the drawings are much better than I could have done back then.

Those are real nice designs for both of them. definitely has like a new warriors vibe like they are part of the team.

Well, the designs date from about 1978 or '79. Very soon after we did these characters, we evolved to our later characters, Mega and Wildstar. Much as I like magnetic powers, being super-strong and invulnerable was cooler.

That long ago? The costumes do have a retro feel yet still can be of today.

Ultiman is my first original superhero character, created about 1977 or 78. My friend Jeff and I have been collaborating on ideas almost that long.

No wonder they look retro.

I'm a big believer in making my designs look like they fit the times. This was one of my complaints about the Watchmen movie. In the 1960s they were wearing the same 21st century-style costumes they had in the '70s and '80s. Materials and styles change over the years and I try to make my costumes reflect that.
Of course, back then, I was just trying to come up with what I thought would look cool in the comics of that time.

Man, I never gave myself a chance to watch the Watchmen movie, heck even read the comic book series. but it's funny you brought up how costumes to stay relevant in the times.

One thing I like about Magnus' outfit is the simple striking design.

I've always preferred simple designs, because I am basically lazy and re-drawing a complex costume over and over gets really tiresome. Plus, there are those long shots, where you can't draw small details and the costume still has to "read" to the eye. That's why Spider-Man's costume is so perfect.

Yeah. it takes time after time to come up with costumes.

I usually have an idea in my head when I start sketching, but a lot of designs had to go through a number of revisions before I get what I like.

Funny, cause sometimes I would do the same thing to go over the first drawing to maybe give it new looks.

A lot of artists draw a figure, then use tracing paper or a light box to work out their designs without ruining the original figure.
