Sorry to say this, but to me it doesn't seem so brilliant. It's just that wherever I try to look at this epic painting, my eyes always end up looking at the bright lava at the bottom.
The focus should be on the goblin's face, but somehow the big creature behind it has more impact which is kind of weird, to have the thing in the background have more presence than the character in the foreground.
Anyway, I am not saying this is bad, it's just it could have been way better done on the composition.

Interesting comment. I don't share your experience. My eyes are also drawn towards the lava, but because it moves up they then go via the goblin to the big guy's eyes. Then they follow his hands back to the lava and then back up again. So (for me at least) the image works very well in leading my eyes to circle over the canvas. I agree that the goblin is not the focus of the painting. But rather than being a problem, it's actually interesting that the eyes are not focused on the center figure, who as a result gets a slight mysterious feel, as if he really isn't entirely there. Sure that breaks the rules of classic composition theory, but there's nothing wrong with that I think.
