Just for fun, hadn't worked with traditional media for a while and really missed it. Had trouble with the hair and would love a few tips in the right direction!

This is fantastic.
I've always been very frustrated by the fact I can't draw. I have no talent or disposition whatever. It is quite humbling to see that other people can do marvels and wonders.

Thank you, I really appreciate that.

Personally I find drawing just takes me an incredible amount of time, compared to other artists,

I don't consider myself naturally talented, just naturally patient haha

Henzu [2012-12-30 18:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Lovely detail on the face. But the hair are a little too detailed for my liking. Above all they are not single strands but locks of hair, larger masses of shape that cast shadows and reflect light. As the face is the central, most informative part of the piece, the surrounding hair can be out of focus, not so pronounced as to compete with the expressiveness of the face.
The technique looks more like charcoal with the shading and use of eraser, I like it when the possibilities of a medium have been explored- in this case I'd expect to see at least some pencil work, but I guess everybody have their own method. All in all, I can say that it's 8 hours well spent . Good job.

Thanks loads for the kind words and critique!
You can see from my other works that hair is always an issue of mine,
your advice really helps, I think I need to stop trying to draw every
strand of hair and think more on how it forms as a whole.
I'll definately be considering what you've said next time I pick up
the pencil, thanks for the help

Glad I could be of some help. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid to make mistakes. No amount of time doing what you enjoy is ever wasted. I suggest trying some live model study if you want to really get everything looking right on paper as well as in your minds' eye. When you see the shapes that for instance hair makes, it's a lot easier to get the shading etc. right on paper. Everything has a shape and an inner tension- a photo just shows a moment- a drawing can capture the essence of that moment through the experience of the mediator, the artist.
