Description Edit: This is an illustration for a fanfic I wrote. I have put the first chapter on DA here:

There are four more chapters that are hosted on Fan Nation, here:

The story as a whole is rated PG-15.

I recently saw an excellent exhibit about Jim Henson's work at the Freer Gallery in DC. I was thinking about how much I love old-school creature effects, make-up and animatronics, and seeing all the children and monster puppets from Sesame Street got me wondering about the twins that Hellboy and Liz were set to have at the end of "Hellboy: the Golden Army". What would they look like, and how would they be socialized?

I don't know if Guillermo del Toro will get a chance to finish that idea -- Mike Mignola has said that a Hellboy III movie is iffy because "Golden Army" didn't do too well when compared with all the other blockbusters this past summer, and also del Toro is going to be working on The Hobbit "for a thousand years". I had problems with Golden Army, but I still want to see a third installment because of all the potential plot that hasn't been resolved. At the very least, we've got a couple of people who have lived in institutions their whole lives, probably have no outside friends and no life skills (What kind of resume could Liz possibly have? "Held one job... quit it thirteen times..."; and Hellboy was "fed six times a day" -- can he even cook? where are they going to get all that food?), have just quit their only source of income/support, can't integrate into normal society, will probably be on the run from the government... and they're going to support two children? Argh! Del Toro, how were you going to resolve that?!

This image comes out of a conversation I had with a friend right after Golden Army, when we decided that the twins will be "pink and lumpy" -- that is, mostly human, but not quite. There has to be a boy and a girl, to echo Nuala and Nuada. And the boy's name is Trevor. Really, what else could it be?

The book the girl is reading is "The Monster at the End of this Book".

In it, Grover hears that there is a monster at the end of the book, and terrified, he tries everything he can think of to avoid it (building walls, pleading with the reader not to turn the page...). At the end, Grover realizes that HE is the monster at the end of the book. Kind of a gentle introduction to the kids of human-monster relations.

The sketchy thing behind the chair is supposed to be a poster for "The Storyteller", which is a Jim Henson series starring John Hurt, the actor who played Trevor Bruttenholm.

Even though I found the prospect of HB and Liz reproducing- together- pretty damn stupid, I really love this picture. You put a lot of thought and effort into this and it's very good and awfully cute.

Also, The Monster at the End of this BooK happens to be one of my all-time favourite reads- yes, to this day, even. Extra points, then- like you even needed them. Great job!

Thanks so much for the comment! That makes me feel really good. ^_^

I was introduced to the Hellboy comics and the first movie at the same time, and I love them both in different ways. Liz/HB is a squicky concept in light of the comics, but I think it's grown on me since I watched the commentary for the first movie and heard Mike Mignola say that the "I'll always look this good" scene makes him get teary-eyed. I feel like hey, if the original creator is going along with it, why shouldn't I?

I had LOTS of problems with Golden Army, though. Forget being true to the comics -- it wasn't even true to the first movie. Character development out the window, cliches galore, cheese cheese cheese... I had really high hopes for it, and I was disappointed. I mean, I love del Toro, but that ending... come on man, it wasn't so much of a fairy tale that it didn't deserve a halfway logical ending. Drawing this pic and writing the story that goes along with it is my way of processing that feeling of "... guh." And you know, it has made me feel better. ^_^

And that, is what's most important.

The first movie was okay, especially after Golden Army. Ouch. But, yeah, in light of the movie, Liz/HB makes a bit of sense.

I'll have to read that story of yours, too.
