Description Acrylic on masonite, 16 X 20 inches

This is one of series of quick paintings I did of scenes from my property a few years ago. These are fun to do, only take an hour or two, which is a nice release from my typical super detailed pen and ink drawings that take forever.

Some day I would very much like to own my own property.

It's frustrating because it seems the only way to have enough money to buy property is to accumulate massive amounts of debt first.

or you could do what my wife and I did, live in an extremely cheap trailer, drive only one old car, and save as much money as possible for a few years, then buy a small home on some land outside of town without borrowing any money. Then you can add on to your house or build stuff as you save some money. I am so happy never to have had a mortgage!

Heck yeah! That's primarily what I've been contemplating.

I guess I'm still 21 and I'll probably end up with jobs that make me more than minimum wage in the future.

What bothers me the most is that many of the things I'm interested require me to go through college which leads to massive debts and I'm not sure whether or not it'd be a good idea to spend four years getting into a field that may not be exactly flourishing, assuming the recession continues.

I've been thinking about eventually going to technical college to be a mechanic or carpenter since I love takin' stuff apart to see how it works and puttin' stuff together.

Man... I dunno where that came from. Guess it's just been on my mind a lot lately.

Haha, no problem, it is good to get things off your chest sometimes. I wouldn't worry too much about whether the market is flourishing. If you are good at what you do, you should be fine. I never finished my degree. Went to art school for one year, and decided it wasn't for me. I started working in entomology a couple of years later as an illustrator. Still there, but mostly doing research now. Weird how things turn out. I wouldn't mind being a carpenter either. I love that stuff.

P.S. Have a long term plan and start thinking about it now and you can do what you want (that is, if you are working). Either way, you don't have to fall into the American idea (trap) that you have to borrow money. It is way easier in the long run not to really. But, you do have to be willing to live at or below your means for a while. Most people want everything all at once, which is a problem. At your age, I was in a bad position, little money, could not really afford school, etc., but by the time I was 29 I had enough money to buy a house and 20 acres. Obviously, you could not do this in L.A. or some places where homes are very high in price, but that is one reason I like living where I do! Keep the dream alive!

Great piece and totally understand that you want to this kind of painting because it is totally something different. I do the same thing myself... when i draw i try to this realistic and try to do my painting in a lose kind of way. Keeps it both interesting and it's nice to change medium when you feel like it... so keep it coming i would say.

yeah, its good to have different outlets for artistic expression. I also have a few tiki/totem poles things that I did for fun.

Really, that sounds like fun.
Did you paint them or was it more a like sculpture... or both?
Did you post some pics of them somewhere?

Looks like fun indeed and must be fun to make them with your son.
Thanks for putting up the link.

Wonderful painting, Joe and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that does quick landscapes to "keep the edge honed."

this is very different than your other pieces! Very reminicent of impressionism, it's beautiful!
This may just be the quality of the scan (or however you got it onto deviantart) but i feel as though there could be more of a play of light and shadow in this piece, it might just add that extra ummph. But then again, most of the pieces I put up that are photographs/scans are a lot less vibrant than their real counterparts.

thanks, yeah, it is pretty different, but only because I have not posted many of these. I have done a bunch of them. The actual painting is much more vibrant.
