I saw the movie...they could've used the whole thing as a Kansas City Shuffle kind of misdirection---have Captain Celaeno tell them that a blue pegasus flew by their ship, told her "Give Tempest Shadow this message: *blows raspberry*" and then that she few in some other direction, any way but south. Tempest doesn't search the ship or threaten her, they're in the clear.
A surprising amount of the plot of this film stems from lack of creativity and idiocy, when you think about it!
