Description First out in my miniseries Warrior rabbits of history: a Scythian archer from around the 5th century BC.

The Scythians were nomads that inhabited the areas around the Caspian sea and what is now Ukraine. Like so many other nomads of the Eurasian steppe, horses and horse archery were vital for the Scythians.

They may have been the inspiration for the Greek myth of the Amazons - the tribe of warrior women. Because unlike the ancient Greeks, Scythian women seem to have taken part in war. Many Scythian graves have been excavated, and both men and women have been buried with weapons and armor, and with signs of combat on their skeletons.

Ancient sources also mention Scythians and Amazons in direct connection with each other. They are both often depicted in the same way on paintings: with pants, the characteristic cap and the intricate patterns on their clothes, like this bunny has.

There's also a theory that Scythian archers may have served as something resembling a police force in Athens in the 5th century BC. There is very little evidence for this though. It is mostly based on the playwright Aristophanes. In one of his plays, there's a Scythian archer who cryptically acts very much like a police officer. The archer's lines are also written with a heavy accent, giving us one of few clues as to what the Scythian languages might have sounded like.

Thanks a lot! I've actually never played Rome 2 total war. Only the first one, where the Scythians are all dressed in nothing but orange pants. I'm still disappointed at that, haha.

Remember what rome 1 total war did to the Egyptian faction?

Oh, lord, the Egyptians, haha! So cartoonishly weird and out of place that I actually enjoyed playing as them.

They should've been considerably more Greek at the time period. Because it was many years after the conquest of Egypt by Alexander.

I mean, I understand it from a game design perspective, as it would get pretty boring to have basically nothing but phalanxes for such a large chunk of the map. But it still makes me chuckle in its weirdness.

To be fair, even with their design the faction was still phalanx heavy.

That was fascinating, Joen!! ^_^ The possible source of the Amazon myth...I love seeking out the real-life explanations for folklore. It's so interesting to see how people were inspired to create lore like that. Thank you for sharing the history!

And the art is of course really good, too! that just goes without saying, lol.

Thanks a lot! Really agree about the explanations for folklore! I still remember how much it blew my mind when I realized how many real-life places that are referenced in the old Greek myths. Like how you can basically track how Odysseus traveled across the Mediterranean sea.

You're so welcome! And wow, I didn't know that...I bet that woud make a pretty amazing vacation, lol. But yeah, as they say, there's a grain of truth behind every myth. I'm not certain humans are able to just come up with stories from nothing, so I imagine all myths and legends are exaggerated true events. ^_^
This is just so fun to talk about...thanks for opening up this discussion!

Oh yeah, I'm always interested in that and how myths relate to the societies of the time. Like how I once read an interesting article about the many similarities between old stories about fairies and modern stories of alien abductions.
