Description I was reading about centaur and stumbled across the story of "The Battle of the Lapiths ".  In the story Hylonome lost her husband, the centaur Cyllarus, whom she loved and she then took her own life to join him.

It seemed like a good opportunity to try a group scene and for some action. No post work

You can see an alternative version with less DOF at joepingleton.deviantart.com/ar…

Very nice! However, I think you are misusing DoF a bit; it's main use is to hide unwanted background detail, but here you are blurring stuff that you also want to show.

Thank you, I often misuse things. Part of the learning process is find out what doesn't work.

The intention was to use the DOF to put the focus on the couple instead of the battle raging behind them.  I was hoping that it would show that their emotional pain overshadowed the physical violence and chaos behind them.  I may have went over the top with the effect

Maybe a little

Maybe you could use a shorter focal length instead? It will enhance focus (attention, not optical ) on the foreground by making the background "smaller":

Thank you,
I was concerned the DOF was too much.

I had never heard the story before.  I started to think that since it predated Shakespeare by hundreds of years that he probably would have heard it.  Just proves that the same story repeats it's self in many forms

Nah, I think it looks fine !

It's quite possible that he might have based his play off of it!

LOL, yeah many of them do !

First, really well done, Joe!

This is a really stunning picture.

Second, the DOF got me a bit torn. We've talked about dof some, and you know how I'm sometimes too careful with dof and want the background to be more prominent.

This is a example where I personally would like less, or maybe even NO, dof. And it has nothing to do with the execution, nor your fine abilities!

To me it has to do with the feelings, associations and personal preferences.

Let me explain.

Due to your excellent composition of this picture, I started to associate it to those old oil paintings of greek gods and the like. You know, where there are alot of facial emotions and sometimes small fat baby angels and other things that

doesn't make sense. Like this: www.brushwiz.com/images/painti…

Your picture has alot of that going on! Like why is the Hylonome character even there when it seems like the battle is still raging? A lot of the emotional expressions and behaviour are also similar.

That is why I think dof makes this picture more like a photograph than a painting, which would be my preference. I think that would've been awesome!

But as I said, I'm torn, because it is still stunning as it is!

And please don't read too much into my feedback, it's mostly just a part of our discussion of dof.

Thanks for this one, it is a favourite!

Thank you for the thoughtful comment
It did look more like a painting when I left out the DOF. I also tried double the F/Stop, but the DOF seemed too subtle.  So I decided to make it more pronounced.  I may have went to far

GhostRide-Media In reply to JoePingleton [2017-09-04 10:04:16 +0000 UTC]

I thought you might have tried different F/stops.

Nah, you didn't go too far.

It's just interesting how such a simple thing as dof can put the same picture in different moods, associations, and feel to it.

Don't let our discussion get in your head too much, the result is stunning!! :-D
