Description The first page of the improvised "nameless short story" I mentioned a while ago. Initially this opening page was just a test I did to figure out quick ways to do space BGs, then I decided why the hell not continue on this and see where it goes. Honestly, I have no idea.

At first I was thinking about saving this project for when I have my website up and running, but then decided against it. So, here. I'll update new pages as I happen to draw them. As I'm currently working on the first volume of Guncats, I will be updating this one pretty randomly as I happen to draw new pages on my spare time.

Oh, nice! Improvised comics are so much fun. It's great to sometimes take it easy and make up shit as you go along lmao. And starting off with some nice space backgrounds, ooh I like it already!

Haha, it really is! This page was actually at first just an experiment to find a quick way to do space backgrounds for Guncats. Then the idea just hit me, that I wanted to do an actual comic that looks like this.

I would call that a successful experiment hehe. Do you have a method to make all them space backgrounds quickly?

Ah yes! Takes something like 5 minutes, tops, to have an entire page's worth of space. Just fill a page with black then Filter > Noise > Add noise... then adjust levels so that most of the noise disappears and leaves you with something resembling a BW image of space, then just add some speckle and variation to the tones with a brush, and it's done. :'D

I must've been doing something wrong? I couldn't get the noise to look like stars lol.
But I still like to use Greg Martin's technique to make a starfield, which makes stars from noise too, but takes way longer than 5 minutes. >__>

One of the important things is to not use too big canvas or too high resolution. Otherwise the noise will be too small and it'll just end up looking too restless. I usually create the noise in 72 dpi, and then increase it to match the desired resolution. I can try and see if I remember to do a visual demonstration after we're done with the fourth issue of Guncats. :'D

Sorry for the delay, I was without internet D:
So yeah, that was my mistake - I used too big of a canvas. Greg Martin's technique has a similar caveat, and I had to size up the canvas for that one as well, since I usually work at 300 dpi.
So now I know.

No probs! I've was first dead busy and then half-dead, so I'm sorry for taking my time replying too...
That's pretty much what I figured since noise is relative to the amount of pixels your image has. It may take a bit of levels adjustment and sharpening to make it look exactly the way you want after scaling it up, but I'll still take it any day over having to paint an entire canvas of space. Haha.
