Description Monsters, weird creatures and strange people.

From left to right:

- La Demoiselle Marchant sur le Ruisseau (The Lady who Walks on the River). A few days ago I recalled one of my favorite songs when I was something like 8 or 9 years old [link] My father had the 33T. Litterally it's the story of a guy who loses all of his memories by seeing a girl walking on water. Obviously there's some metaphor going on but I never got it. It's even more confusing because of the word "demoiselle", which can refer to a young lady but also to a dragonfly - so at the time, I thought the "demoiselle" was some kind of bug-like fairy walking and dancing on water. So here she is, finally.
Also, this song is insanely full of joy for a song about a guy losing all of his memories including his own name. ಠ_ಠ
- A bird with a lamp for a head. The insects are attracted by the light and he eats them.
- A shaman inspired by a bunch of things. He wears a mask inspired by an inuit mask, representing a fish with wings. His wand is shaped like the symbol named "marque de l'Outarde*" and he also holds a bullroarer**.
- This guy's hat is designed to collect rain.
- I love my plushie.
- The monk who illustrated this medieval book once fell asleep on it and his nightmares gave birth to that thing. The guy on the chair is just a random history student who thought it was a good idea to open that particular book.
- Another bird-like person. This one looks less agressive than usual, and also looks like a velociraptor for some reason.

Fun fact: I was drawing the shaman (in the train home, as I often do) when the guy sitting next to me in the crowded train began to be really annoying. He looked at the drawing, said he was in the army and he would shot anything looking like that shaman if he'd ever see one. It could have been funny but for something like five good minutes, he said the same thing multiple times, like he was on a loop. Then I cracked, yelled at him something like "OK I GOT IT, YOU DON'T LIKE IT AND YOU WANT TO KILL IT, GOOD, NOW SHUT THE HELL UP!"
And to my surprise, he did.

*The Marque de l'Outarde (I don't know the english equivalent... "bustard foot mark"?) is a very, very old symbol, almost pre-historic, which exists in many different cultures. For example, in the Bambara culture, it symbolises death when it's turned down and life when it's turned up. It's still in use nowadays as the universal symbol of non-violence.

**The bullroarer is the oldest music instrument known. It makes an interesting sound when rotated, depending on the shape (usually some kind of "vrrrrrrrrrrrrr" or "oooop ooooop oooop"). It also belongs to a variety of cultures and has a lot of names :
- Imillutaq for the Inuits
- Puurorohuu for the Maori
- Tjurunga in Australia
In France it's called a rhombe or a diaoul.

I love the book monster! I always knew there are things living inside my books

Sinon, tu est rendue loin dans les The book of Monsters! D8

All Great, my fave is the Shaman. Sort of a cross of NW indian art and a Kaccinna of the SW Hopis

Oooo! Je me disais bien que ça faisait Inuit!
Je n'ai jamais entendu parler des rhombes, par contre, diaoul veut dire "diable" ou "démon" en breton...

gehnloa [2011-02-23 19:55:21 +0000 UTC]

so the bugs get eaten up right into the lamp part of the bird... hmm, and then part of the bugs could be burnt to keep the flame up, maintaining constant fuel...

That's a very clever development of the idea, thanks for your contribution
