Description I had this idea for a long time but couldn't find the right picture to work with. When browsing through the folders on my PC I stumbled on Sophie's 'New Witch Pack four' that I downloaded a few weeks ago. I was happy that Sophie would be the girl that would feature in 'Her hidden shrine'. Sophie has 'thousand faces' and in my eyes her stock already is art.

The inspiration for this artwork is the 'old' theaterworld. When I look at 'Her hidden shrine' it almost seems that I'm part of it and that it's surrounding me.

Everything is brushwork (as usual). Some are stamped in white and recolored by hand afterwards, while others are stamped 'right away' in the correct color. Coloring brushes by hand is done to create a more authentic look. The 'painted' portrait in the frame is Sophie also. I manipulated her face to give her some childish look.

I love old colors. That's why I repainted the original dress with a very deep antique red. On top of the fabric I started with brushwork in several orange and yellow colors. Every layer has another model brush with a different colortone. They are all very transparent. By doing that I'm able to create warm and rich colors. The decoration is done with little 'Buttons' that are actually framed faces. I left two of them very visible. Don't ask me to explain that because it's symbolic.

The hat is manipulated, repainted and brushed. I also used a texture for extra depth and for the background. The 'balcony' is created from that same texture. The little golden dots are also brushwork.

Details from this artwork can be seen here [link]

Thanks for viewing and for your support!

Take care,
John

I really love this piece--how very beautiful it is. I am fascinated by how you have acheived such a depth and richness of colors particularly in the fabric areas. It reminds me of the old Dutch and Flemish painting masters yet re-interpreted in a modern way. The subject matter and items depicted are particularly interesting as well. Thank you for sharing it. Your work is very inspiring!

Gah! This bloody scares me, John. I'm absolutely terrified of clowns. It's beautiful, but it's really creeping me out...

Don't be terrified I know that there are more peopple who are terrified for clowns, but don't worry this is a good one She's even a little bit sad and that's why she has her own shrine that is hidden for the outside world. A place where she is surrounded with her symbolic memories. A place where she can be herself and finding the rest in her heart and soul

Hmmm... I'm a bit unsure as to whether or not a sad clown is less frightening than a cheerful one, but she does frighten me less after your explanation. She's certainly a beautiful clown.

I could get lost staring at this... so much detail and care put into it. There's something so comforting and warm about the style and coloring. It evokes the same feeling any great painting from the Renaissance era can give me. It's hard to believe this is digital. Breathtaking, as always!
