Description "Sea of Marmara" (9in H X 12in W) depicts the "Blue Mosque" (Sultan Ahmet Mosque) against the backdrop of the Sea of Marmara as viewed from the Galata Tower across the Golden Horn.
The shadows cast by the setting sun gave the illusion that the stone minarets were suspended weightless, in space.
Sultan Ahmet Mosque was built between 1609 and 1615 by Ahmet I. It features 6 minarets as does the Grand Mosque at Mecca, though the latter is larger and the most important Mosque in the world. It is called the "Blue" Mosque because of the colour of the interior mosaics which cover the walls and ceilings.
