Description
Aristaeus and Eros are two characters from Greek mythology who have a connection in the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Aristaeus was a son of Apollo and Cyrene, and a god of rural arts and crafts, such as beekeeping, olive cultivation, hunting and healing. Eros was a son of Aphrodite and Ares, and a god of love, desire and attraction. According to Virgil’s Georgics, Aristaeus fell in love with Eurydice, the wife of Orpheus, a famous musician and poet. He chased her through the woods, but she stepped on a snake and died from its venom. Orpheus went to the underworld to bring her back, but failed because he looked back at her before they reached the upper world. Aristaeus was grief-stricken and his bees died as a result. He consulted the prophet Proteus, who told him that he had offended the nymphs who had raised him by pursuing Eurydice. He had to appease them with sacrifices and prayers. After he did so, he received a swarm of bees from a dead ox as a sign of their forgiveness.
