Description This was drawn by Andy MacDonald and colored by me a couple years ago. Devil's Due basically hated everything about it and told me to make all the trees green and everything local colored. I was feeling especially prima donna that day and told them to find someone else. So, this never saw print and I never bothered to find the one that did.

Fuckers. Trees aren't green. This is the way. If ever I have the money to afford you, you're the first colorist I would want to do whatever he likes with my art. If I'm born again as a colorist, I want to be you

the front paws to look alittle iffy and its to brown..
the trees look out of place with the foreground but the lion itself is amazing the soft brush metal finish on the lion and the reflections of the trees looks so cool

It's funny that they are worried about the trees when the front paws of the lion are not anchored properly. It looks as though the left front paw is planted on the ground while the right front paw is some how magically lower.

I know this is not a critique of the colors....but who can critique the master.

If you want to see an awesome Voltron, look no further than here:

Of course it needs some color.
I have no shame.

Too bad they didn't go with this. It is beautiful. Transition from a warm background to a cool foreground really places extra emphasis on the giant robot cat. Plus, the subtle tone shift on the legs are great.

Honestly, any editor who would request that those trees be made local doesn't deserve your talent. Good call!

Aside from the pink holding line/gap around the tree and stuff I think this shit is spot on! I don't even have a big problem with the pink either, I just think that if I were that editor, that's the only comment I would've made. The color is gorgeous and the rendering is beautiful.

This is the sorta piece that makes me love you, the theory is there and the rendering is just delicious.

Thanks! I'm always on the line about the holding/halo lines. When artists leave a gap in the lines between the background and foreground, I always feel like it needs something to complete the thought.

Yes!!! Sweet... I got back from college only to find that my mother sold all my old school toys including my Voltron die cast figure... so, later one I went to ebay, found one and now he sits upon my shelf! Although he's missing his right hand... and sword, but he's 99.5% complete! Lol. Nice pic man!

I find nothing wrong with it. More green...like trees always are green, summer never gives way to fall and winter. Pheh.

I'm not a particular fan, however this is an illustration that can get people wondering "what's the story?" and check it out. That should be the push, get people interested.

Well done! Thank you for sharing it!

JohnRauch In reply to CelestaKrantz [2009-06-08 18:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Green is my favorite color. My problem was never that I just didn't want to use green. I just thought it was bad form to act the way they did without giving any direction at all beforehand.

It is bad form to do such a thing. We're illustrators, not mind readers.

AndrewTunney [2009-05-26 23:47:22 +0000 UTC]

Man, the biggest thing I have a problem with in comic colouring is what I call 'blue sky colouring' where grass is always green and sky is always blue etc etc. The world doesn't look like that and neither should comics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnRauch In reply to AndrewTunney [2009-06-08 18:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Couldn't agree more...and even when the world does look like that, it's pretty boring. I prefer to add a little drama.

I was also going to add that the lion itself could use a bit mors shades and shadows, like when cars are parked under trees, usually you'll see shadows of the trees on the surface.

just ideas, I'm nobody to say anything e being an amature in art an all lol

JohnRauch In reply to FrankORourke [2009-06-08 18:17:28 +0000 UTC]

That's not a bad idea. I just didn't want to make the image more cluttered than it needed to be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FrankORourke In reply to JohnRauch [2009-06-10 07:55:40 +0000 UTC]

nah, it's not cluttered it looks pretty good actually.

It's like the lion is just casually strolling through the forest.

FrankORourke [2009-05-26 23:23:51 +0000 UTC]

I see nothing wrong really, I suppose it depends on the person viewing the image.

Alot of folks like more realism when it comes to ladscapes, this looks like Autumn/Fall I like it myself.

I guess what I'm getting at is it's always to do a few version of a piece so the person paying has actual choices about what they wanna use.

Awesome job man.

JohnRauch In reply to FrankORourke [2009-06-08 18:16:59 +0000 UTC]

In this business, it doesn't pay to do the same job multiple times when 99% of the time, they like the first thing I turn in. If I was drawing, I'd submit a few roughs for them to choose from, but coloring doesn't work that way.

FrankORourke In reply to JohnRauch [2009-06-10 07:57:41 +0000 UTC]

oh. I had no idea.

JohnRauch In reply to FrankORourke [2009-06-10 16:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, the thing is, most colorists are coloring 22 page books in a week. So, you learn fast to try to get it "right" the first time or you're doubling your work load.

What was the piece they ended up using.

I like the yellow purple color scheme. It's funny how some editors who don't have real art training don't really know how to give art direction.

Great piece man.

I know for a fact that some of the Devil's Due editors have Art degrees. Often it's Hasbro that denies the work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

JohnRauch In reply to RansomGetty [2009-06-08 18:15:45 +0000 UTC]

That wasn't the case here. If this editor did have an art degree, he would've made a terrible artist.
