Description Hey Guys

I wanted to share a photo from my first public outing at the first Orlando Mini-Makers Faire. It was a blast and the props held up wonderfully to a few thousand handlings, hehe.

If anyone notices the unfinished guns, those were brought to show some of the less exciting (but often more important) steps to customizing

You should definitely go to some larger cons, like Megacon. You'd probably do great there!

I appreciate that! What I have to do is find a way to make enough to bring to these shows. Most of my pieces are commissions, so they end up shipping as soon as they're finished. Shows end up being more of a "here's what I can do for ya, but nothing here is for sale" lol. If I can figure that part out, I'll definitely get more into the cons. It's not fair that my props go to more shows than I do. hehe

Well, I can say this for sure, the props you make to specifically resemble game props with be great sells, so you should definitely make more of those, regardless of if you have orders. As for other things, steampunk is huge right now, so you can't really go wrong with anything of that variety. But I'm sure you already know this.

Out of curiosity, what area are you out of?

wow! nice spread! How did you afford 4 tables and not sell anything?? I recently bought in to a half table at one of the really big cons up here and it's going to cost me $200!!! I'm going to need to sell at least 10+ guns to make profit!

It was actually (2) eight-foot tables! They provided the tables for free, so that helped a lot on the $80 fee they were placing on "sales" tables.

Thats awesome!! Free tables! love it. And $80 for a sellers table!?! I wish con's up here had tables that cheap!

I wasn't selling anything, but that would have been great to have you see them in person! I was giving out secret tips like crazy! hehe

Awesome! You are a brave man to allow the fondling of your beauties... I keep a couple "sacrificial" example pieces specifically for handling by the masses, lol.

Brave or just a little dumb, haha. I had assumed there would be a moderate number of people coming by and that it wouldn't be hard to keep an eye on everything. Then they opened the doors and my table got mobbed, haha. I think I'll go with your idea in the future, just to be safe

Were the sales good for you?

JohnsonArmsProps In reply to Dark-Lemur [2012-06-06 19:45:53 +0000 UTC]

I gave out hundreds of cards, but everything I brought were commissions or my personal pieces. When I had to tell people that nothing was for sale, they did look at me a bit funny, hehe. It was a maker faire, so I wanted to focus on showing how the steps are done and not haggling over prices - to that end I think it was successful

I hate when they touch it... a lot and then don't buy. should've put it on some metal rack and put them waiting gun license signs. or "no loading ammo in shop"

CaelynTek In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-06-06 11:17:37 +0000 UTC]

At my first show selling modded/painted toy guns, most people were nice and asked before touching, but those that had kids.... yeah I wanted to scream every time someone's 8 year old picked up one of my guns (without asking) and just started yanking on all the parts trying to figure out how it works....ACK!

I just had a flashback! Lol

Uratz-Studios In reply to CaelynTek [2012-06-06 12:38:24 +0000 UTC]

thats nothing compared to those dam kids at my trade fair taking my fiberglass mask, wearing it then slamming it back on the table. Luckly I put the nice painted ones behind me on a wall rack. Usually u put high prices next to it the parents will automatically stop their kids from touching it. LOL

JohnsonArmsProps In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-06-06 20:01:17 +0000 UTC]

I didn't have any prices since I wasnt selling, but I would mention what the gun would cost if I saw a kid being rough with something. The parents would jump and snatch it away with the quickness

Uratz-Studios In reply to JohnsonArmsProps [2012-06-06 23:26:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha works all the time. I would say nicely " Hey you want it? it only cost $xxxx dollars." The parents would do the same LOL.

CaelynTek In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-06-06 12:56:19 +0000 UTC]

Put a BIG price tag on it that's easily seen and a "you break it I break you're wallet" sign.

Haha, I know there were a lot of things I didn't plan for on this first attempt! I'll work on a wall to hang the larger stuff for next time, plus I think that would look pretty cool

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Uratz-Studios In reply to JohnsonArmsProps [2012-06-06 05:52:18 +0000 UTC]

yeah I'm new to peddling my crap as well. But yeah a better presentation helps with your prices. Maybe wear a Trooper outfit from aliens?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnsonArmsProps In reply to Uratz-Studios [2012-06-06 06:07:24 +0000 UTC]

Haha, nah, I think I'd sweat like a sasquatch in a suit like that

I actually didn't allow anything to be sold at the show. I think a few people were supprised, but most people understood the theme of the show and that was sharing knowledge and not selling (not that I fault anyone who was selling). I get all the orders I really need from eMail so it didn't affect me financially
