Description Colored Pencils on Bristol Smooth
14x20 inches.
The Wood Brothers invented the modern pit stop. They were brought in to do the pit work for the 1965 Lotus team of Jim Clark. Did they win the race for him, no. They got him in and out of the pits quickly and with out error. Clark and Chapman and the mechanics did the rest. Here is a link describing the 1965 Indy 500 pit work. It was kindly sent to me by Aya-Wavedancer.

They were always modest and a class act. Drivers over the years for the Wood Brothers included; Tiny Lund, Dan Gurney, Cale Yarborough, A.J. Foyt, David Pearson, Neil Bonnet and Trevor Bayne. The cars in the background are the 1965 winning Indy Lotus and what might be the most famous Stock Car of all time, the 1971 Mercury Montego driven by AJ Foyt and Β David Pearson. Leonard Wood is in the foreground.

And the drawing is very good, too!
Not just the composition!

Well!
Very interesting composition! It works very well. I don't think i would have the guts to try it.
But it illustrates what you're getting at very well.
That's a great piece of work!

A 'good' pit stop at Indy was less than one minute at that time. The first pit stop fuel only was timed at 17.9 seconds. The second fuel only stop was 24.9 because there was less fuel pressure in their gravity feed system. The car needed no tire changes, but the Woods made sure the rims and spinners were carefully prepared for that possibility. Tread depth was also checked during that pit stop.

Β

BTW, the Lotus 82 had a 58 gallon fuel tank. Wood felt it could optimallyΒ fill the car in about 15 seconds- meaning they had a 4 gallon a second fuel rig.

Gah! Lotus 38!!!! ^_^

Β

Dad raced a 1/24 slot car BITD of one of those. Had a T-Car in a Heinz Happy Soup livery- got the label off one of my cans, and then the white and orange race car. Built a Black one for a friend.

Β

They were VERY popular for those purposes BITD, no real body, all chassis.
