For my next carve this weekend, I took on another heavily shaded thing! It's the Hylian Shield, from Zelda!I was planning a different Zelda pumpkin for this year, but it's going to be one of those carvings that takes for freaking ever, and I really don't have the time for it right now. So I'll tuck it away for another year and fill my Zelda pumpkin void with something a little easier!
This is the Ocarina of Time version of the shield, I wanted to keep it simple and the Twilight Princess version is really frilly. It also involved one of the most challenging patterns I've ever worked with, since I couldn't find any basic drawings of the design I wanted, I based my carving off of a picture of a real Hylian Shield. Which might explain why it's slightly lopsided.

Yep, 100% pumpkin! I wish I had time to carve for others, but I barely got my own done this year... next year I'm going to try and sell foam ones though!

Sweet! How do you carve it half-way like that? I haven't explored that technique yet (haven't been able to for three years for... craptastic reasons).

Te idea is to peel or scrape away the layers without punching through. I use a dremel drill, but you can also use other tools to do it. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it!
