A range in the Malborough Sounds is seen in the distance.

In Maori mythology, Tapu te Ranga was a Patawa, a point from which the Maori Chief Kupe sighted the giant octopus called Te Wheke-a-Muturangi.

It is also the site of my most daring sea exploit. Some years ago, I had a work colleague get me into a dive suit with a snorkel, and we crossed from the mainland to the reefs around the island. It was weird swimming forward, knowing there was nothing underneath you, you could not see the bottom, but there were small jellyfish everywhere. Once arriving at the reef I mostly recall see Paua moving about on the rocks and sea slugs.
