Is it just me, or are there missing steps?
Also.. the way you explain somethings seems wrong.
I keep getting a dark "main focus point" -- too dark and very little detail left.
I'm running PS CS5
My only other guess would be that this tut is old and the setting might have drastically changed(?).

There is a better way of addind a border. Save it as a flat image, make a new file. You want such a size? Say your normal sig is 400x120. And you want it to be 5 pixel border at the top and bottom, but not on the sides. Make a new file at 400x130. Use the bucket tool to fill the background with Black (If you want it black). Paste it into the file, and center it. Save it. =]
