Description

Today is the "Day of Dredd". Fans of Dredd and the Karl Urban film of the same name are taking to the internet in an attempt to show support for a Dredd sequel....

....which will probably never happen, because the majority of you would rather watch whatever bed-sheet stain Michael Bay has covered with CGI and flashed before your easily-led eyes.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS.

“Nice” in this case being a future lawman killing lots and lots of people.

That's the thing about Dredd - He has this bizarre, ironic sense of humour that you could easily miss because of the whole 'lantern-jawed inhuman law-enforcement machine' thing he has going for him. Especially in the older 1970s- and 1980s-era comics there were lots of cases where there was just a hint of a smile on his face or he delivers this devastatingly dry wise-crack at the perp-of-the-week's expense.

Liked the original Judge Dredd movie with Sylvester Stallone.

The fans said he shouldn't have removed that helmet.

Still, instead of Micheal Bay directing, who would you prefer,
and who would play the Judge? Wait... you did say Karl Urban.

Elements of the Stallone movie were acceptable but overall it was an abomination when compared to the vision and ethos of those who created the Dredd character in the original 2000 AD comic.  The more recent movie, starring Karl Urban, was much more faithful to the character's cynical nature and to the splendidly grim horror that is life in Mega City One.  It lacked the budget of the earlier Stallone "vehicle" yet was more entertaining to watch.

One irony is that the creators of Dredd viewed him as a cross between Rambo and Dirty Harry thus intentionally drew him with the "Stallone chin", which funnily enough Karl Urban also seems to possess.  Dredd in 2000 AD is portrayed as the fearsome, uncompromising lawman with a mystique so intense that nobody dares to even view his face, a mystique maintained by never seeing his face in the comics and ruined in the first movie by Stallone's inability to control his vanity in front of the camera.

I absolutely love your work - your style is wonderful, and you have a lovely precision to even your sketches. I am commenting on this one in particular because it is Dredd, and I am on DeviantArt to do "Dreddy" stuff - great picture, really lovely with some nice humor in it.

But, also, I just wanted to give a general "thanks" for the great art, particularly the cartoons of the anthros - that style of art (your specific style of anthro art - the girls being hourglass-curvy and the guys being broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped hulks with gigantic hands) is the inspiration for an art-style within my on fanon world. I must try to get some kind of shout-out to you in the writing!

Thanks!

More Dredd! I loved the movie (never read the comics.. Sowwy..), & I think it really deserved a sequel to explore more of Anderson & Dredd's 'relationship' as Anderson becomes a full-fledged Judge!

jeremy3852 In reply to Jess-Derringer [2014-12-17 07:00:45 +0000 UTC]

would probably not see Anderson again, from what little I have read of the comics, very few people other then dread survive to make a second or third appearance.

FanArtFantast In reply to jeremy3852 [2015-03-15 06:16:19 +0000 UTC]

Anderson is actually one of the frequent characters and have had several of her own story arcs.
And with her comes the potential of a movie with the Dark Judges. Not sure how i feel about that though. Might be awesome (Dredd punching the personification of Fear in the face) but not sure it would fit in the more realistic setting in the latest Dredd movie.)

I read your Author's Note quickly and skimmed over the words "Dredd", "sequel", "Michael Bay" and positively panicked. I'm just glad it was a momentary misunderstanding of mine and that Bay is not, in fact, getting anywhere near Dredd. It already hurts me enough to see what he did to my precious Transformers. If he also ruins Dredd, I'm gonna hurt someone.

Great pic, by the way! I chuckled; it's so him to say something like that. Man, I should reread those comics... and rewatch those films.

Aaand I've suddenly got plans for tonight.

Fuck, I'd love another dredd movie.  I liked both the Stallone and 'recent' Dread movies and was a big fan.  It just doesn't get enough screentime and it disappears from my mind.

Karl Urban was actually perfect for the role and I really do hope there's a sequel.
Although the plot might have been inspired from another movie I still found it be quite good. I loved the thing they had going on with Anderson and Dredd.

You know I want a Dredd sequel. I "dredd" the thought of it being lost to cinematic history.

Very nice capturing his sneer and chisel jaw. Those are a must have for the character regardless of adaptation.
