I really like this for a few reasons. I like the autumn colors. Kirins aren't commonly depicted by artists. And it reminds me of illuminated script.

I like the concept. I would suggest working a little on anatomy.

There is also a larger number of leaves in the drawing. I find so many a bit distracting from the Kirin. Sometimes, less is more.

Finally, I would suggest giving yourself a border or margin around the paper, half an inch at least. This will help you avoid going off the edge of paper. Having a border on your paper also makes your work look more professional and will make your work easier to matte and frame.

Here is a Kirin that I've drawn if you would like to take a look. [link]

I hope this helps you. Keep drawing!

thank you so much for this constructive comment. but I don't understand what you mean about" having a border"...
it's only my first Kirin I every have drawn...and I am working on an other

The border is an area on each side of the page that you leave white. If I want to draw a picture that is 12 X 14 inches, I will find a piece of paper that is 14 X 16, at least an inch longer on each side. I usually measure in and draw very light guide lines so I can see the area that I want to draw in.

If I need to make changes to my work, like make something bigger, extend an arm or leg a bit in one direction, I have room to do that. I can go outside of the guide lines if I need to, and the border keeps my work from going off the paper. If you had a border, you would have had the extra space on the paper to finish the kirin's back hoof.

Having a border means your drawing can become larger if it needs to. So many areas of the kirin are very close to the edge of the paper. It feels "uncomfortable" because the kirin seems to be crammed in a space that is too small for it. Sometimes that feeling is created on purpose, but if you had given yourself a border to begin with, you would still have an inch on each side of the paper. The kirin's tail and mane could be extended. They would have the space to be longer, to flow, and the kirin would have more movement instead of being trapped in such a tight space.

And when you scan your work you simply crop off any border or white space that you don't want. You're drawing can be framed up just the way you intended. I will mention again that a border makes matting and framing much easier. Without a border, a matte would overlap or cover even more of the kirin's mane, tail, and hooves. With a border, the matte can be cut to fit without covering or hiding any of your drawing.

One more tip: Always matte pencil drawings. If you frame a pencil drawing without a matte, and the glass is directly against the pencil, your work could smear. Moisture could also build up easier and ruin the paper.

I also suggest buying fixative to spray on pencil, color pencil, charcoal, conte crayons, etc. to help keep your work from smearing. But only use the fixative once the drawing is finished.

I hope that explains a bit more about the border.

thanks, I've desided to be a kirin-artist (BIG self esteem), but I just found a enormous book ( 600 pages) explaining the animal anatomy for traditional artists
