Description Since i've been getting quite a few questions about what brushes I use, i figured I'd take a picture of tools i most commonly use.

A) Sticky Post it's: I use for some masking and protecting faces.

B) Raphael Kolinsky: I use a #1 and #3 [link]

C) Winsor & Newton Series 7 Miniature Brush #3: I love this brush. I just might use this one more than any other brush. Notice how short the actual bristles are. Because the hair is short the brush bounces back into shape and the point is always crisp. [link]

D) Griffin Nib holder with Deleter Maru nib: the only nib i use when i sue a nib these days. WAY batter quality than the standard Hunts 102. It does take some getting use to but I've never had a problem getting use to them. [link]

E) Tooth brushes for spatters

F) Correction pen, I rarely us it.

G) Copic Wide marker 110 black.

H) Faber-Castell PITT ARTIST pens, i love these because they are filled with india ink. The big one you see is a brush pen.

I) The plastic cover to a CD bundle i use as a big water bucket

J) Fine spray bottle: i use this to refresh my ink when it starts to get to thick, also for my painting with watercolor.

K) This is a brush pen, I use my own ink to fill it with (L, boiler maker). [link]

M) Sock Eraser for page clean up.

N) Needed eraser

O) DR. PH. Martins BLACK STAR "matte" waterproof india ink. The only ink I prefer to use.

P) DR. PH. Martins BLACK STAR "Hicarb"

Q) DR. PH. Martins Liquid frisket

R) DR. PH. Martins PEN-WHITE

The last photo to the right is a watercolor tray you can usually get at a craft store.

These are the tools i've come to prefer after 11 years of inking. I hope this helps with some of your question.

the solution you use to clean your nibs will that rust them? also the liquid frisket you use does it smear inks already laid down? i got some blick liquid frisket and it smeared inks from over 2 or 3 days ago

Nope never had a nib rust. My favorite liquid frisket is Pebeo and I've never had a smear. I use it same day, hell same hour. LOL!

the sock eraser is something that was pretty common back in the in drafting. it has like eraser particles stuffed in it and when you rub it across your paper it lights things. you don't use it to completely erase.

Sometimes i'll use it the clean the page up a but before inking since it doesn't completely get rid of the lines.

hey Jonathan,
I love seeing what other inkers use, thanks for posting this! I just did some work on Arkham Reborn that required a bit of crow quill and after seeing your tools I decided to order some of those nibs and see the difference. The Hunts quality has gone to sh*t in the last few years so thank you for sharing your preferences!

anytime, the deleter may take some getting use to. They really just depend on your touch, but i LOVE them and they last forever.

i'm kinda of a neat freak when it comes to inking so I'll use post its to quickly mask things off. If it's required depending on what i'm doing I also use glad cling wrap, works like frisket just cheaper

Never heard about the use of a tooth brush

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonathanGlapion In reply to etherealbeauty [2009-10-31 14:15:37 +0000 UTC]

yup. The small one is a childs tooth brush, that one will give you a finer spatter (almost a mist).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

etherealbeauty In reply to JonathanGlapion [2009-10-31 15:32:33 +0000 UTC]

That's an interesting way to spatter, I used to do it by hitting the hair of the brush with the fingers (and create a mask to not spatter the whole drawing)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonathanGlapion In reply to etherealbeauty [2009-10-31 20:17:51 +0000 UTC]

yup i do that too also flicking my finger gives another type as well.

I have a Raphael #1 too... I prefer the #2 more. The #1's hairs are too long, i find and don't really bounce back on me... do you have that problem or did I just happen upon the shittiest Raphael ever?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonathanGlapion In reply to gavinsmith [2009-10-31 14:14:36 +0000 UTC]

I think this can happen with any brush, you may have gotten a rare bad Raphael. Are you using the 8408?

Try the Winsor & Newton series 7 MINIATURE brushes, that seems to be my go to brush.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gavinsmith In reply to JonathanGlapion [2009-11-01 03:40:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what the #1 is... I quit using it pretty much the day i got it, because i hated it so much. I know the #2 (which I use all the time.. i have one for inking and one for using pro-white) is the 8404.

I haven't tried any of the Winsor & Newton brushes, but have heard nothing but good things. Next time I need a new brush I'll definately check it out though. Thanks for the suggestion!

JonathanGlapion In reply to gavinsmith [2009-11-01 03:54:39 +0000 UTC]

no problem, I don't care for the regular W&N series 7 but I lover the series 7 miniatures, totally different brush. But I tend to use a brush like a nib so to speak.

ComicMunky [2009-10-31 05:16:46 +0000 UTC]

CD Bundle as water bucket, I thought I was the only one.

I've not tried DR PH Martins matte, I usually use 50/50 mix of Speedball super black and Nobel Chinese Ink...it dries fast and gives me good blacks...but it bleeds...for some reason...

why do you like the DPHM Matte so much?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonathanGlapion In reply to ComicMunky [2009-10-31 14:12:26 +0000 UTC]

I've tried just about every ink, I haven't really tried mixing inks though. I use to use Koh-I-Noor ink, great stuff. But when I found the Black Star "matte" I like that id has no shine to it, it dries flat so when I scan it there is no reflectiveness to it. Right out of the bottle it's as smooth as glass, it's also a fast drying ink and you don't get a lot of streaks with it. The Hicard is great to if you use it just for line work and not spotting the blacks, this one has a shine to it.

Okay, question time

K: That's the Kuretake brush pen right? I have that one in black. But you say you fill it with your own ink? How? I love this brush pen but I dislike the ink which is not water proof.

Thanks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonathanGlapion In reply to Eric-Merced [2009-10-30 22:11:56 +0000 UTC]

I fill it with (L) thats a boiler maker, watercolorist use them and I've found it works great for filling the cartridge that comes with the brush pen. I just dump their ink out and rinse then I put mine in.
