As I watch MLP further and re-watch The Land Before Time franchise again, something kept popping into my head several times and I couldn't leave well enough alone. Sunset Shimmer and Pterano have a few noticeable similarities.

Sunset and Pterano wanted to take over the world.
They were very manipulative; when she was in the wrong Sunset would blackmail her classmates. Pterano twists his backstory to convince his own nephew that he was awesome.
Both each had two helpers; Sunset had Snips and Snails and Pterano had Sierra and Rinkus.
Both were kicked out at one point in their lives.
Both have similar redemption situations (Hell, if you watch near the end of their respective first appearances, they basically say the same thing).

Differences
As much as I like Sunset Shimmer, Pterano's backstory is written much better. He believed he was a leader when he convinced a group of dinosaurs to follow him. The outcome is pretty grim even for a Land Before Time film (close to the first movie, but no cigar).

Unless you want to add the infamous God Pterano, Sunset has had a few "power modes."
