Description Candid Street Photography

You take a camera into a bustling City Centre 7 days a week and you`re guaranteed to nab something different and unique every single time.

It never seems to generate the love that many other categories get here on DA,but personally I love it,admire it,think it was born to be converted to Black & White and will share some of my street stuff now and again....like right now

In the City I always have my cam wrapped round my wrist, locked on AV Mode with the smallest Aperture possible set, trigger finger ready.
I literally stepped out of the Car Park as this Girl walked past me and cos I was dialled in and good to go,I got this shot.

Be confident,be ready or you`ll miss it and it`s gone forever.

Thanks for looking, take care, hope you enjoy

Just out of curiosity, dont the ppl hear the click of the camera? Have you ever had someone turn around and look at you crazy?

I doubt she would have heard it here Andrea,it was at a fairly bustly time with Traffic and other people going about their business,it`s only really noticeable in quiet places like Museums, relaxing coffee shops, etc

Never had any hastle btw,had some looks, but nothing to wet my pants about

Very brave to take pictures of people candidly. Has anyone ever protested against having their picture taken? I hope not. You capture them brilliantly.

The more you do it,the more confident you`ll become Andrew, some places are more discerning about it than others I`ve found though...I would never shoot in my home town for example.
In London too, there`s a different atmosphere to someone with a cam in the Square Mile compared to all the Tourist hot spots where every second person seemingly has a cam in their hands and is pointing it somewhere

The only time I had an unhappy camper though was in Camden last Summer when a jealous lesbian wasn`t too keen on my taking a shot of her property girlfriend
Turns out it was a crap shot and I happily deleted it.
Couple of Security guards in Canary Wharf with usual questions and that`s about it mate,no other problems ever

I couldn't help but notice this one while reviewing your gallery. Indeed a good shot. It's got a sixties era vibe to it.

I find it interesting that you are a wrist wrapper when it comes to the camera strap. I removed mine long ago and use a modified strap that is for the wrist only. I never could stand having the camera draped around my neck.

JonnyGoodboy In reply to so1rfan [2008-12-28 20:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah,I can see some of that now
I don`t think I`ve once draped the cam around my neck too,it`s just not me.
Did you design this wrist wrap or purchase it somewhere Dennis?

so1rfan In reply to JonnyGoodboy [2008-12-28 21:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Homemade, I looked for one at the local camera shops but they only carry wrist straps for point and shoots.

I keep meaning to look online for one.

Only problem is when you gotta go...

O.K. Jonathan, I've looked at this shot many times now and I think I've got a handle on how I feel about it. First, I gotta say congrats, my friend I spy your focal length and the way the background is blurred out this means you were fairly close to your subject when you pressed the shutter.

It's a nice shot, for sure I like that you caught her looking in the window and I like your take on what might be happening in her head. You're a 'glass is half full' kind of guy (or an optimist)
I agree with you that this shot screams out for black and white. It wouldn't look right in color at all. there's some really nice contrast in this that I think would be lost in color.
And last ...I know I'll never be a street photographer

Nice work my friend! Sorry it took me so long to comment

JonnyGoodboy In reply to Corvidae65 [2008-10-05 23:43:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the quality analysis John,I applied a spot of extra blur on that guy in front and the lady reflected in the window, simply because they distracted from the eye candy more than I desired
And you`re right, the colour version pales by comparison

Corvidae65 In reply to JonnyGoodboy [2008-10-06 00:18:57 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome, Jonathan

Just wondering have you ever shot anything in the mono mode your camera has? Mine has 3 different mono modes--B/W, Sepia and Cyanotype. I've only used the B/W mode, but I'm starting to get interested in the others. I kind of like shooting in mono and the shots are easier to process it seems like. Dunno, just wondering

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JonnyGoodboy In reply to Corvidae65 [2008-10-06 15:21:03 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn`t use it exclusively to be honest John, the obvious downside is you`ll only ever have that particular shot in Black & White and never in colour if you do that...at least if you shoot in colour, you`ll always have that option of converting to mono/Sepia etc as and when you feel like in Post Production

On another note, you could shoot the same scene twice using both modes, maybe that would be a better option for you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Corvidae65 In reply to JonnyGoodboy [2008-10-07 03:10:43 +0000 UTC]

Shooting one in color and one in black and white is what I've been doing as I feel as you do that if I shoot in mono all the time I won't have a color copy. Of course, my subjects don't move for the most part and I think it would be hard to take 2 shots on the street

I don't really like shooting in B/W because it limits the tonal range I can play with in post. In color, you can boost some colors or de-boost them to get the effect you want.
