Description While I'm counting down the days until 'Blood and Wine' is finally released, Ciri is joining in on the gaming fun, slaying the monsters with a controller like us non-witcher folk for a change.

Just a silly picture to pass time, really. I hope you enjoy it.

Don't let it discourage you that you are not where you want to be yet. Go ahead and draw Ciri. Enjoy the process! Afterwards, look at what you can already do and look at what you aren't happy with yet, and then figure out the next steps towards improvement. That's how you get better. Or at least that's how I got to where I am today, and that's what I'm still doing to improve. I've had a look at your traditional drawings, the elephant is especially lovely. Practice shading a bit more - it pays off to be courageous here - and maybe you'll surprise yourself!

This is going to sound odd, but I think you did a great job on her teeth -- they, ni general, always give me a hard time so I tend to notice them in the work of others.

Jooleya In reply to kmkibble75 [2016-05-30 08:29:26 +0000 UTC]

Lol, thank you, Kevin! That is indeed one of the more unusual comments, but I'm happy you like her teeth. For me one of the realisations that helped me with teeth was that the mind tricked me into thinking "teeth = white", which isn't helpful and makes them look fake and unnatural. With pencil drawings the better way to regard them is "teeth = several shades of grey". The teeth of the lower jaw are also usually darker than the upper front teeth because they sit a little further back and each tooth itself gets a little gradient of grey that is the lightest down the middle of the tooth and darker towards the sides. For me that achieves the most realistic look.

Wow, what an outstanding piece of art ! So, let me gather my words for a critique... but I don't even know where to start Okay, here we go.

Here face is drawn absolutely superb. Facial anatomy is top-level. The expression on her face is captured perfectly. The shadings and lightings are smooth and placed right where they belong. Can you please tell me your secret how you blend the pencil strokes so smoothly?
Her eyes are totally stunning. She looks so very alive! I'm a perfectionist when it comes to eyes - they are the most important part of any portrait. But you did a flawless job here!
The only thing that I might criticize here are the index fingers. They look a bit small. Considering the fact, that she's holding her hands a few inches in front of her face, I suppose they must be a little bigger (or she has rather tiny fingers).

Anyway, keep up your art! This comment was brought to you by ProjectComment

Jooleya In reply to Spacegryphon [2016-05-30 08:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your comment and kind words, Spacegryphon!

I'm glad you like her facial anatomy, expression and the shading. As for my secret to blending the pencil strokes so smoothly - in short, it's patience. Her skin is drawn entirely with my mechanical pencils with 2B (and occasionally 4B) Ain Stein lead. The lead is excellent as far as blending is concerned, which helps a lot, but the other half is that I work with very light circular pencil strokes that I blend (fingers or paper blending stump) in many layers. Many repetitions of "circling - blending - circling - blending". Oh, and the paper. I have taken to exclusively working on extra smooth Bristol Board because of how evenly and smoothly the pencil blends on it.

And the fingers - yes, they are a bit too small. I've become quite good at drawing faces, but hands and other body parts are a different matter still. I need more practice, I think, and some anatomy studying. I'll definitely work on it, though.

Thanks again for your comment!

Hello I am from .

I love your description, "just a silly picture to pass the time". Well we should all be so lucky to be as silly as you.  Your drawing is magnificent and I really don't throw that word around to liberally. You have great texture, tone, contrast and shading. I really don't have any clue as to who she is but she's gorgeous. You've drawn some really dreamy and sexy eyes. The hair is great.  I like that little strand that goes down in front of her eye, nice touch. The little of her clothing we can see is textured very nicely especially the small pieces of string (or rope) that are attached.
The only thing in this entire drawing that seems to take away from it ever so slightly is the clouds in the background. The left side of the drawing (Ciri's right) seems as if the layers aren't blended very well.  Then again maybe they're not clouds.
Other than that this drawing is perfect.  It is an instant fave.  Have a wonderful day.

Hello Professor! Thank you very much for your detailed feedback.

I'm happy to hear that my silly spur-of-the-moment idea of having Ciri play her own game is enjoyable to look at, as I did put a lot of work into executing it well. I was actually quite nervous about that strand of hair that goes down in front of her eye because it's was one of those bold moves with the eraser after everything was nearly finished that could have totally messed everything up if it didn't work. Therefore it's a real relief to me to hear that the strand of hair is actually adding to the appeal of the drawing!! Phew, thanks for that!! I also put quite a bit of work into the textures of the clothes (armour) she's wearing, so yay for it paying off!

And on the left (or Ciri's right), those 'clouds' you spotted... well, let me say they're not supposed to be clouds. Just shadow and light stripes cast by the window off to the right's blinds onto a wall behind her. BUT... and that's a real issue... I'm right handed, so while i work with my right hand, I hold the paper down with my left. I try to touch the bristol board as little as possible and wash my hands repeatedly throughout drawing to keep them grease-free... but it keeps happening that over the course of many hours the paper collects invisible fingerprints there. Invisible until I draw the background, that is. Even the tiniest trace of grease will then start to show and the graphite will cling to the paper unevenly no matter the amount of blending. The result looks like clouds. I haven't found a solution for that yet. Maybe I should try to find a light cotton glove for my left hand, as no amount of care so far has succeeded in keeping the dreaded clouds away. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll try to find a solution for that issue! If you have any ideas you'd like to share, you're also most welcome to!!

And of course thank you for the fave! Have a wonderful day, too.

I know this will sound overly simplistic but have you ever tried turning the page upside down.  I draw lots of things upside down.  Also I am now learning to work left side of the paper to the right side because I too am right handed.  I am completing sections at a time moving from the  upper left towards the top center towards the  top right , then the middle in the same pattern and then the lower third of the drawing that way I complete my drawing in the lower right third corner. Also, tracing paper over the completed part of the drawing can work as well. Hope some of this helps. Keep it up though your work is terrific. You'll figure something out that works for you yet.

Jooleya In reply to professorwagstaff [2016-05-30 08:22:31 +0000 UTC]

My page turns rotates ever so often during the drawing process, but most commonly it's facing the right way up or right or left. Upside down is usually what I do for the background only, as for facial features it seems to risky not to see exactly what I'm doing (my mind struggles interpreting facial features correctly upside down). I'm sure I'll figure something out in time. Maybe I need not only a paper under my right wrist to prevent smudging, but also one under my left fingers to prevent fingerprints.

Hello, I came from #projectcomment !

I think this is very nicely done! The shading is amazing, there is alot of depth to it. Her eyes are very piercing. As Lili said, I think the complosition could have been a bit better, so that she is not holding her controller so close and so that we can tell more that she is gaming. Other than that you did splendidly! Keep it up

Hi Britney! Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you like the drawing.

Yes, it takes a moment to realise she's holding a controller and is gaming, doesn't it? - For now I hope the title helps viewers catch on more easily, and for the future I'll keep in mind to give more thought to composition before jumping in with the drawing.

wonderful deviantion ^^, I specifically love the hair and the scar, the way you did that  gives her a lot of personality, her eyes holds a strong expression, and her playing the game is a good idea, the highlights and shading are very well done, and it looks like you took a lot of time to perfect this drawing, one thing you can maybe fix is her eyebrows, it looks good but one is a little bit lower than the other, maybe it's something you wanted I don't know, and maybe try to do a larger version, like chest shot, or something, the drawing will look better, well it's only my point of view
good luck for the continuation

Jooleya In reply to lili-tomato [2016-05-27 21:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your thoughts and suggestions, Lili! I'm glad you like the hair and the expressiveness of her eyes, as well as the silly idea of the drawing.

Her eyebrows are assymetrical because I wanted her to raise an eyebrow in that sort of curiously-skeptical-but-intriqued way. I can't tell how well it worked, because it's always hard to see your own works objectively.

About the chest shot... yes, I think it would work as that, too. The main reason why I usually draw portraits that center around the face is that drawing in a realistic style is easier when the face is large enough. So for a chest shot to still have a big enough face, I need to draw on A3, which is still at the very edge of patience I can muster. A3 is a LOT of space to fill with a pencil.

I got what you're trying to say, it's true, sometimes it's not easy to draw small detailed faces in the paper, but we should try that eventually, it will make it a new challenge ^^
regarding the eyebrow part to make it looks like she's raising it on purpose, you can add some folding effects in her eyebrows, a small one on her forhead, on the top of her lifted brow and another one in between her brows, good luck, and don't forget, nobody's perfect, you need to have fun first
you're a wonderful artist just keep it up

Thanks for the suggestions. You're right that having fun is central to making good art - at least for me.

I like challenges, so it's likely I'll try again, but my last attempt at drawing a smaller detailed face  on A4 - while not bad - was also not the sort of 'heck yes' experience that makes me rush to start on another one. It works much better in the larger A3 , but I need a lot of time to finish such a large drawing when it includes a background. I'll certainly do it again, just not every time.
