What a cool illustration! I read the comments and I agree; the story that goes with this would make a really cool book. But I understand what you mean about children's publishers, etc.

I mean, the TV networks don't even air the old Bugs Bunny cartoons because they say its not good for kids.

Anyways, great job on this!!

Thank you!
Personally, I find picture book writing to be harder to pierce than middle grade and young adult. There are more restrictions on length and subject matter. It's a shame really. Some of my best childhood memories are from stories that moved me to tears.
I used to watch the Bugs Bunny cartoons so much as a child! It's a bit unreal to think it's no longer suitable for kids. It's like how the early Sesame Street shows now come with a parental advisory! Crazy how times change, isn't it?

I love all the details in this, it's just so much fun to look at. It reminds me of Little Nemo in a way.

Thanks! I never thought of it before, but I see what you mean about little Nemo. What a charming comic that is.

This would be a great starting point for a kids' book.

Thanks! Unfortunately my stories always end up skewing too old and complex for picture books.

There was a little bit more to the story:

The boy is an orphan growing up in the aftermath of a war. In order to help rebuild the country the government handed out animal helpers to the populace- The boy ended up with the animals no one wanted.

Ha! I do like the added tone of his not necessarily even wanting these assistants. Dunno if that's too old a story. Kids are resilient and much more capable than people give 'em credit for.

I completely agree! When I was young, I loved stories with drama and death (nothing too gory, of course). And sure, I would cry sometimes, but that was part of feeling those strong emotions.

It's one of the biggest problems with children's media these days (I feel), in that kids can and should be exposed to and handle the ups, down, and sidewayses of life. Doing it in fiction is a much safer and accepted way to do that than seeing it first in real life. At least kids can learn to cope without too much damage when it's in story form. I wish more publishers were risk-taking, cause nothing is worse than a dull, saccarine and boring feel-good book with no drama.

I completely agree with you. I think it's one of the reasons I started writing/drawing things for a slightly older crowd. As you go up in age groups, it gets more accepted to have difficult or scary subjects.
