There's two ways of working with oils. You can finish one part of the painting at a time or work in layers from light to dark, much like oil pastel. It's important that you decide beforehand what type of canvas you would like. Linen has a very different effect than coton. Also, my preference goes out to natural brushes as opposed to synthetic ones but they are far more expensive. You also need to work in a well ventilated area or you will faint, trust me. Have you ever worked with other paints such as acrylic? I can tell you that nothing compares to oil even though it is very messy and smelly.
Be wary of using standard colours and be sure to mix them yourself; be careful with pure whites and blacks. In any case: have lots of fun. Oils are great to work with.

And people like the colors because most people have trouble realising that they see more colors on the horse than the brown it actually is. The reflection of the grass, the light of the sun, the sky, shadows, it's all different colors - and most people don't even know it, let alone see. And even when they do see, they have trouble drawing it themselves.
Pretty horse. *grin*

I know you're right but a lot of people still respond in such a shocked way to my use of colour: "OMG the horse is PURPLE! OMG his muzzle is GREEN!!" Et cetera.
Akhal Teke! Want one want one.
