In a recent Sonic comic, he shows a decent fighting skill, especially after Bunnie got injured and he had to help their friends in battle. Yes, he still has cowardly moments but only against enemies he has no chance of defeating (like the Iron King, an invulnerable bull) and if he doesn't have to defend anyone.
