Doreen Allene Green, created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko, first debuted in ‘Marvel Super Heroes’ vol 2 # 8 (Winter 1991), for Marvel Comics, due to Murray wanting to write a lighthearted superhero story, opposed to the often heavily dramatic tales that were the norm in mainstream comics at the time. The result was, as many people call her, a joke character taken to her logical extreme.

While Doreen’s abilities might seem ridiculous (the ability to communicate with squirrels, plus having squirrel powers herself), she’s surprisingly effective as a superhero, often besting Marvel’s heavyweight villains with ease, and being pretty much unbeatable. As part of the ‘joke character’ aspect, Doreen’s most impressive victories often happen off-screen. However, her ‘screen time’ certainly proves how tough and competent she really is. In fact, Doreen was a short-lived member of the Great Lakes Avengers, and only left because she was so good that the rest of the team pretty much stopped working at all, so she left so they wouldn’t become overdependent of her abilities. Doreen has also been part of other Avengers teams, with her main contribution being working as Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ babysitter, an actually very challenging job due to baby Danielle being in constant danger as the daughter of two superhero parents.

Besides comic books, Doreen and his squirrels (specially her main sidekick, Tippy Toe) have appeared in several animated series, usually as cameos or a special guest; she’s also part of the Secret Warriors, in the ‘Marvel Rising’ specials and TV films ; plus, she’s a playable character in various video games.

So, yes, the wacky yet invincible superhero girl will continue going nuts for a very long time; Happy Birthday, Nutty Gal.
